(STEP) | EP23 | Nurturing Early Childcare Teachers: Kai Ming's Vocational Training Program - STEP
    2024/07/16

If you're interested in becoming a substitute teacher or enjoy taking care of young children, this episode is perfect for you! We will introduce Kai Ming's STEP vocational training program, which specializes in training substitute teachers for children aged 0-5. Sabrina, Kai Ming's HR Director, explains a major advantage of the program: no early childhood education (ECE) credits are required to apply, significantly lowering the entry barrier. You can learn early childcare education knowledge and gain experience while earning a salary and receiving benefits, preparing you to become a competent substitute teacher.

Additionally, Anny, a substitute teacher graduated from the STEP program, shares her journey from registration and training to final job placement, encouraging new immigrants to try this training program. In addition, San Francisco passed Proposition C in 2018, making childcare services more accessible for low- and middle-income families and improving protections and benefits for childcare workers. The city government plans to raise the minimum hourly wage for childcare workers to $28 by 2025, attracting more people to enter the childcare industry.

If you are interested in joining the STEP program, you can sign up online here. If you need services in Chinese or Spanish, you can call 415-594-7400. CAA’s economic justice program team is also happy to assist you with the entire application process, including writing a resume, completing application form, and translation services. Contact them at 415-598-8508 (voicemail) or email EJTeam@caasf.org.

EP22 | Calling for Community Support to Improve Internet Access Issues in San Francisco's Chinatown
    2024/04/26

In today's world, having a reliable and affordable internet connection is no longer a luxury but a necessity for students, young parents, and even the elders. According to a research published by CAA, almost half of SF Chinatown households do not have an internet broadband subscription and for those who do, the internet is slow and unreliable. In this episode, SRO resident Zoey will discuss how the lack of reliable internet affects her and her children's daily life and mental health. Additionally, we have invited Calvin Yan, a political aide to Supervisor Aaron Peskin, to discuss how SF City Government is intervening and providing support. The "Fiber to Housing" program is one successful example. Five affordable housing buildings in Chinatown participated in the installation project, bringing faster and more stable internet services to tenants. In short, we need community support to urge the City Government, internet providers, and property owners to work together and ensure that all communities have access to reliable, high-speed broadband.

We need your support! You can use our call to action tool to let our local officials know that addressing digital equity for Chinatown and other communities of color is important to you. You can click here to sign the petition.

EP21 | Chasing Dreams & A Better Life: Chinese Migrants at the Southern Border
    2024/03/28

Since last year, over 24,000 Chinese migrants have made the journey into the US through Mexico. With limited capacity to assist Chinese migrants in-language, humanitarian organizations in San Diego reached out to CAA to request support for the influx of new arrivals. This request led to our second trip to San Diego this March after our initial visit in December 2023. This time, resources are even scarcer due to the closure of the San Diego Migrant Welcome Center, leaving migrants stranded at a remote Transit Center, where reuniting with their families proves to be a daunting challenge. From March 12 to 14, our CAA team provided direct assistance to approximately 400 migrants each day. We also spoke to several Chinese migrants, delving into their motivations for undertaking perilous journeys to the US, even at the risk of their own lives. As immigrants ourselves, we listen to their stories with empathy, aiming to offer a deeper understanding beyond the mainstream media narrative. Discover the dreams and aspirations that drive these courageous individuals, as they strive for a better life and chase the American dream, just like many of us.
