Non-musical history for today: 1945 – About 30,000 United States Marines landed on the island of Iwo Jima to start the battle of Iwo Jima. That battle went on for around five weeks. The Japanese Army positions on the island were heavily fortified, with a dense network of bunkers, hidden artillery positions, and a shload of tunnels. The American ground forces were supported by extensive naval artillery and had complete air supremacy provided by U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviators throughout the battle. An anomaly of war, the American casualties were 3-to-1 compared to that of the Japanese. Yet, persistence and attrition finally won out.
