We discuss the common failures of steam traps and the impact this can have on your overall system from an efficiency perspective, with a focus on the energy losses caused and the monetary value associated with these failures. We delve into current inspection methods as well as various alternative methods that can be used including thermal and Ultrasound methods, finishing up by looking at the modern remote monitoring techniques used and how they work.

We explore what Through Life Engineering Services is and what type of industries are using this concept presently and if there is opportunities for this model to be utilised within different sectors around the world. We also talk about the cost to apply this methodology and the advantages to both the end user and the manufacturer and if this model can only be applied to new systems or assets, or can it be utilised on legacy equipment as well as looking at where it sits within industry 4.0/IoT.

    In this episode I am joined by James Lalor and David McDonnell from TU Dublin (Bolton Street) to discuss their TU024 Engineering Reliability Management programme which looks at some of the key concepts of Reliability and how their degree programme contributes significantly to achieving maximium asset life, minimising lifecycle costs, risk management, project management, financial management, safety management, environmental management and all while staying focused on organisational goals. We discuss some of the highlights of the course as well as how the course has changed to suit industry needs and the challenges of teaching during the COVID 19 pandemic.
