Stereotyping, generalizing and assumptions are all mental shortcuts that can lead to biased perceptions. They involve making broad claims about individuals or groups based on limited information or preconceived notions.
Stereotypes are fixed, oversimplified beliefs about a group, while generalizations are broader statements that may or may not be accurate for every individual. Assumptions are beliefs or ideas that are taken for granted without proof. All three can lead to misunderstandings, prejudice and discrimination.
