Terry Richmond is abruptly pushed from his bike and arrested by two police officers who take his bail money while he is on his way to release his cousin from custody. After discovering proof of a deeper corruption, the encounter sets off a series of tense standoffs between Richmond and the local law enforcement, headed by the unyielding chief Sandy Burnne, culminating in a dramatic clash. As always, Saulnier tells his story in an exceedingly economical and sparse manner, even though it serves a more popular narrative. Like a punchier, more direct Walter Hill, yet with a more arcane and philosophical style. However, Saulnier avoids mythologizing his heroes, in contrast to Hill. The leads in his earlier flicks are hopelessly incapable at keeping themselves alive.
