Susie Essman and Joy Behar burnished their stand-up stagecraft together in New York nightclubs of the 1980s, and their longtime rapport is evident here. In fact, their mutual friend Larry David is the subject of some lighthearted laughter, although the real-life Susie is considerably more amiable than her character on Curb Your Enthusiasm. Not to say she’s always had it easy: Essman outlines her slow ascent - her attempts to make it in the overwhelmingly male confines of stand-up comedy. She also readily accepts that for her, comedy has always been a coping mechanism - an outlet for anxiety with roots in her childhood. Nevertheless, Essman’s sprightly brand of self-aware sarcasm is strikingly charming, and her wry, observational take on daily life should delight fans of Curb.
