  • The Disappearance of Kurt Newton
    2025/01/20

    Send us a text

A family of four is camping with their friends at a remote campground in Maine near the Canadian border. On a Sunday morning after a hearty camping breakfast next to the fire, the moms went to the boathouse to wash dirty shoes, the Dads went to get more firewood and the kids played. Amongst them was four-year-old Kurt, who was riding his Big Wheel Tricycle. In about a ten-minute window of time, Kurt went missing. What was known as the most exhaustive search in the history of Maine was conducted, but outside of the abandoned Big Wheel, nothing has ever been found. Did Kurt wander into the dense woods and become disoriented, eventually succumbing to the elements? Or did somebody take him that day?

  • The Abduction and Murder of Gracie Nash
    2025/01/13

    Send us a text

Austin Texas, 1983. A close-knit family is experiencing a wave of terror and domestic violence connected to a recent break-up. By the time everything played out, there would be burglary, threats, stalking, arson, false allegations to a workplace, attempted shootings, assault, and eventually there would be murder. So much of this heartbreaking situation has been left unresolved, with everything leading back to one violent woman who couldn’t handle her relationship ending. In the end, two family members would end up dead. One confirmed dead and one presumed dead – because the woman I’m about to tell you about today, has never been found. This story paints a chilling tale of the reach of domestic violence and it may challenge your preconceived notions of who can be the perpetrator of it.

    Send us a text

A young family living off the grid in a rugged part of Northern California in late 1977. The mother and her two toddlers set out to do a host of errands never to return. Nobody in the city of Eureka saw the family complete their errands, but when the vehicle is later found, there's evidence that they did. The mystery of this finding causes rumors to swirl in the tiny community. Did the family get lost and succumb to the elements? Was the mother and her two children fleeing from troubles at home and looking to start a new life? Or were they the victims of foul play.

  • A Deadly Secret Admirer? The Unsolved Murder of Beverly Jarosz
    2024/12/29

    Send us a text

Just three days after Christmas of 1964, in the quiet town of Garfield Heights, Ohio a sixteen-year-old girl was getting ready to meet up with friends. When her friend shows up at their agreed upon time, she does not answer the door. Later that afternoon, the teen's father would come home to a horrific discovery – his oldest daughter dead on her bedroom floor, the victim of a vicious homicide. As detectives dig into her life, they find out from those closest to her that she had recently become a stalking victim – something that they didn’t even really have a word for back then. This stalker has never been identified, nor has her killer, leaving the possibility that they weren’t one in the same. Beverly and the women in her family had prophetic moments around the time of her death about her death, adding a haunting element to the tragic mystery. But believe it or not, even though the release of this episode is the week of the 60th anniversary of her disappearance, cold case detectives are still working with carefully preserved evidence, and their case is expanding. May this be the year that Beverly’s case is finally solved.

  • The Abduction of Vinyette Teague
    2024/12/23

    Send us a text

On a hot summer night, a toddler is spending time with her grandmother and other neighbors on the breezeway of her high-rise apartment complex in Chicago. She is left alone in the busy hallway for just minutes, but in that time she disappears. Nearly fifty people were present at the time she was abducted, but nobody claims to have seen anything. Her mother has gone on to be a champion for not only her daughter, but other missing kids. Her hope is that her toddler was raised by another family who wanted a little girl, and that all of these years later they will find their way back to each other.

  • The Unsolved Murder of Judy Weichert
    2024/12/16

    Send us a text

A woman training for a marathon leaves her house early on a Saturday morning to jog a country road on the outskirts of Oklahoma City. An hour into her run, she is brutally attacked and left for dead. She managed to get to the roadside and eventually a car stopped to help. Her last words were describing her attacker: white guy, blue car. Her case went to the backburner for decades after police concluded that the man who murdered her was in jail for a sexual assault committed the year after her murder. But when a huge scandal shines a spotlight on misconduct in Oklahoma City, it makes investigators question everything they knew about the case.

  • The Disappearance of Darwin Vest
    2024/12/09

    Send us a text

Darwin Vest was a bit of a local celebrity in Idaho Falls. He was known locally as Spider Man because of his passion for studying spiders (and snakes, and other creatures that many of us run away from). His biggest claim to fame was identifying and naming the Hobo Spider that had made its way into homes all over the Pacific Northwest. He was an expert at studying venom in snakes, spiders, and plants and had been used as an expert on these topics all over the country, from college lecture halls to court rooms. In June of 1999, he had secured a deal to sell his Hobo Spider Trap invention and was celebrating at his weekly trivia night at his favorite local bar with friends. But after he left the bar that night, he stepped into the darkness never to be seen again. Did Darwin accidentally fall into the Snake River or did he meet with foul play?

  • The Babysitter Murder: The Unsolved Case of Janett Christman
    2024/12/02

    Send us a text

A teen is babysitting a young boy on a stormy March night in 1950. All is going according to plan until a frantic call comes in to police with a woman screaming, only able to yell "come quick!"
Unable to trace the call, police have to hope she just calls back. But she wouldn't.
The next call would be from the parents of the little boy who return to find their son unharmed but the babysitter brutally murdered in the living room.
A recent series of sexual assaults in the neighborhood seemed to be resolved when a young man was put behind bars. But now this new attack questioned everything the community thought about not only the recent assaults, but a murder that a man had been executed for in 1946.
This case serves as the inspiration for the popular "Babysitter" or "Babysitter and the Man Upstairs" urban legend, but the actual story is so much more sad and tragic than a story trope.
For this 30th episode of the podcast, I discuss the misguided nostalgia our society has for the 1950's and the botched police work that led to racial profiling and the likelihood of a white man getting away with a murder.
