ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
Advent is a season of waiting. We wait for Christmas to come, and we prepare our hearts as we wait for Jesus to return. And waiting is difficult. It is especially difficult when we’re waiting and unable to change our present situation on our own. But that’s exactly what today’s readings from Scripture tell us. This Savior is for people who are held captive by the enemies of sin and death. It is for people who have no power of their own to free themselves. It is for people whose only hope is to patiently and quietly wait for God to act. It is for people who depend on him to set them free. And that’s exactly what our Savior does. He sets us free from a forced servitude to our enemies and replaces it with a free service to our Father.

ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
How does our God work? He is attentive to the humble, but scatters the proud. He brings down those seated on thrones and lifts up those bowed low. He fills up the hungry but sends the rich away empty. He makes himself the servant of his own servant, Israel. God’s way is the exact opposite of the world’s way. Mary wasn’t rich, powerful, or famous. She was an ordinary young woman. Yet through her, God brought the Savior into the world – the one who would lift up the humble and bring hope to all people. Mary’s story reminds us that Christmas isn’t about what we do for God, but about what God has done, and is still doing, for the world.

ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
Today kicks off the season of the church year called “Advent.” During the season of Advent, we prepare our hearts for the coming of our Savior. In the same way that believers eagerly awaited the Lord’s first coming at Christmas, so believers today eagerly await his return on the Last Day. When we understand who our Savior is and what it is that he brings, our hearts are eager for his arrival. The question now is “How do we prepare?” The answer is simple: Repent. John the Baptist was sent to prepare the way for the Lord, calling sinners to repentance. Today, God sends his Word ahead of his arrival to call us to repentance. Christians prepare daily by confessing sins and embracing the promise of forgiveness.
