The rate at which a person begins forgetting things is called the forgetting curve. The curve is a graphic depiction of the decline in memory over time. Ebbinghaus conducted the experiment using a list of single syllable consonant-vowel-consonant nonsense words. He tracked his ability to recall the list of words at different periods of time. He concluded the rate of forgetting starts out steep as people forget new information quickly after being exposed to it. However, the rate of memory loss does begin to slow down after a while.
