  • Elected officials give varied perspectives on presidential debate
    2024/09/11

This is Alexa D'Amato reports for WLIW-FM from Philadelphia.

It's traditional for both campaigns to send surrogates to speak to the media after the debate to offer commentary, reporters surrounded Republican vice presidential hopeful JD Vance, Former Trump official Olivia Troye, and former Trump White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci, among others. Florida Representative Byron Donald was also in attendance to support Trump. He listed his reasons for supporting the former president.

We need leadership and smart policies and common sense. I've seen a lot of politicians come and so when he says he's gonna do something, he does it.

On the democratic side, D'Amato spoke to Gold Star Father Keyser Khan, whose son was killed during the Iraq war. Here's what he had to say last night.

Kamala Harris is the president is most suitable for the president. I will stand with Kamala Harris. I will campaign for Kamala Harris because there is no comparison.

Leaders on both sides claimed victory after the debate.

Michael Dunn reports for WLIW-FM from the Pennsylvania Convention Center last night. Reporters had a lot of questions for Republican leaders immediately following the presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Dent asked the Republican Senator, Marco Rubio, about both of the candidates performance.

I think voters know everything they need to know about Donald Trump and everything he said tonight or did tonight is pretty much consistent with everything they heard from him in the past. I don't think they saw anything from Trump that they hadn't seen before Kamala Harris for a lot of people, is still an unknown.

Later on, former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy told Dent he's optimistic about a Trump Pence administration.

President Trump and I've had some longstanding discussions over the course of this year about some high impact positions in the cabinet and the administration.

Ramaswamy also said he's been recruited heavily for the governorship of Ohio.

  • 51% of voters say abortion is an important issue; Harris leads Trump by 4 points
    2024/09/10

Alexa D'Amato reports for WLIW-FM from the presidential debate in Philadelphia.

According to the Pew Research Center, 51% of registered voters said that abortion was an important issue when picking a president. For South Philly resident Genevieve Mitchell, her vote for president came down to her views on the topic.

I don't support Trump's. My understanding is that he tends to further limit the rights that women have for abortion, so my understanding is that Kamala is hoping to either reverse those, or at least keep the status quo.

The latest data from Pew show crime is a critical issue. Chris Mullah from North Philly agrees.

The crime rate in the city has been going up even more. I've been seeing less cops out, but I can say since this election thing started, I've seen more cops around. But before then there wasn't that much cops around.

Mullah and other locals, some at watch parties in downtown Philadelphia, will be watching tonight's debate, hosted by ABC News.

Michael Dent reports from the presidential debate in Philadelphia at Radio Row.

According to new ABC News and Ipsos Poll, Vice President Kamala Harris leads former President Donald Trump by 4 percentage points among all adult and registered voters, with the margins changing by the day. Students at nearby Temple University explain why voting matters to them.

I think that there's a lot of issues, especially at hand right now.If we rally together, then, we can make good change.Given that it's a swing state, it's really important.

Those are the views of junior Olivia Brown and sophomores Nico Carter and Randy Keller. Over at Drexel University, politics professor Richardson Dilworth says voter turnout is key in Pennsylvania.

Who the electoral votes go to is going to be determined by probably a pretty slim margin. So that margin is going to be determined to a great extent by turn out.

To watch the Trump and Harris debate hosted by ABC News, viewers can watch on Hulu, Disney plus and other platforms at 9:00 PM Eastern Time, or stream NPR's simulcast on WLIW-FM.

  • Young voters are split about watching presidential debate
    2024/09/09

Alexa D'Amato reports for WLIW-FM from the presidential debate in Philadelphia.

Young voters are split about watching the Trump-Harris debate and new polling by the New York Times and Siena College supports this. Freshman Hope Galloway gave her predictions for the candidates face off.

I believe there's going to be a lot of personal attacks involved, which I'm not super excited to hear. But I believe that some majority will come out of it and hopefully we'll get some material that's at least a little bit televised.

While freshman Willow Arnold says the debate falls on her birthday.

I didn't really think about it that hard because it's my birthday, so I kind of don't want that to be ruined. He can ruin any vibe, anything. Like when people bring up, like politics and stuff like that.

But other students D'Amato spoke to say they will be closely watching the Trump Harris debate to learn more about the candidates positions on the economy and border security.

Michael Dent reports for WLIW-FM from the presidential debate in Philadelphia. It's not clear how many college students plan to watch the Trump-Harris debate. Take a listen to some Hofstra students' on following politics.

I just like, don't think about politics, that. I mean, I know what I was taught in, like, history and stuff, but aside from that. Not much. Politics is not something I've been taught.

That was junior Laylane Foster, freshman Aiden Morrow, and junior Nea Roman. For some perspective on why, here's an educators view:

There's been a lot of failure in the Board of Ed. with high school students who can't read.

Marianne Callanberg is a professor at Touro College, and she taught in high school for 34 years. Callenberg's husband, George Fleischer, is retired. He taught high school for 30 years.

Children who are going to school will not understand unless they get a fundamental understanding of reading.

Fleischer and Callenberg say they'll be watching tomorrow night's debate, along with what they hope will be much of Gen Z.
