The storm destroyed 5,000 houses and 700 fishing boats in Sri Lanka, causing at least 1,800 deaths and leaving many missing in Dhanush Kodi. The Madras government declared the city a ghost town and uninhabitable. Now the area has a population of around 500 people and more than 50 fishermen's huts, who mainly depend on fish and tourist income.
