St Isaac of Nineveh (7th c.), or Isaac the Syrian, is renowned for his spiritual writings. After only five months as bishop of Nineveh, he returned to a life of solitary stillness in the desert of modern-day Iran. The Chapters on Theology is one of Maximus’ most eclectic writings. The Third Book of the Maccabees is recognized as Deuterocanonical Scripture by the Greek and Russian Orthodox Churches. It is also included in the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible. It is considered to be apocrypha by most other church traditions. It tells the story of persecution of the Jews under Pharaoh Ptolemy IV Philopater (222–205 BC) whose plans to annihilate the Jews in Egypt are thwarted by God. This was some decades before the Maccabee uprising in Judea, as chronicled in 1 and 2 Maccabees.

What does man seek in religion, and what should he seek in it? How does God reveal Himself in order to bring man to a knowledge of the Truth? How does suffering help this revelation to occur? These and other questions were discussed by Fr. Seraphim Rose, an Orthodox Christian monk from the mountains of northern California, during a lecture he gave at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1981.
