The year is 1790, and the world of 1990 is imagined by Archie Archibald. It is a world of steamhorses, steamsnakes, steam whales, and steamhawks. The brightly painted towns are connected by rails and cobblestone highways. The inhabitants of these towns live in colourful dwellings, work in colourful industrial mills and everyone wears a brightly coloured wig. The fields are grazed by hideous but meaty oversized cattle, and the corn is cut with clockwork sickles.

100 years in the future, everyone wears filtered goggles that project their preconceived biases upon the world. This is how they get along, how they can all have nice things. Peace hadn’t come in the form of socialism or fascism or any of the dystopias or utopias their ancestors imagined: instead people are allowed to live out their fantasies, the simulation’s game engine veiling the differences that used to cause contention and strife.

With the Alliance Kingdoms and the Empire of Mongavaria now at war, half-elf Fieran Laesornysh has been sent to the naval base of Dar Goranth with one mission: protect the strategically important base from attack. But when he arrives, he discovers there are no aeroplanes for his men, they have been assigned to a squadron of elves, and the elven commander resents Fieran for his lineage. Defending Dar Goranth will be a little difficult if he can't even get off the ground.
