In this episode of Reformed Devotionals Daily, we reflect on Genesis 2:18–25, a passage that reveals God’s final act in creation: the formation of woman and the gift of human relationship. Until now, everything in creation had been declared good—but suddenly, something is “not good”: the man is alone. From this moment, God crafts a beautiful solution by forming woman from man’s own rib and bringing her to him.
We explore the significance of Adam’s joyful exclamation—“bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh”—and consider how this first human relationship forms the foundation for marriage. The text shows us that marriage is more than romance or companionship; it is a covenantal union designed by God himself, where two become one flesh in every sense—physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual.
Yet this isn’t a passage only for those who are married. We reflect on the universal truth that human beings are made for connection—with one another and with God. Whether single, married, or longing for companionship, we are all created with a deep desire to belong, to be known, and to live in relationship with others.
This passage also challenges how we think about relationships in a culture that often downplays their importance or distorts their design. It invites us to value and protect the relationships God gives us, to seek out community, and to see in marriage a reflection of the greater relationship we were created for—the one between Christ and his bride, the Church.
Join us as we explore this tender and powerful portion of Genesis, and let it point us forward to the hope of being fully known and fully loved in God’s coming kingdom.
