Hear U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel John Nagl, former Iraqi government official Ali Allawi, retired British Army General Sir Michael Rose, Professor Kanan Makiya, and former U.S. Ambassador to Croatia Peter Galbraith on this edition of Fresh Air.
John Nagl commands the 1st Battalion, 34th Armor at Fort Riley, Kansas. He served in Operation Desert Storm and was the operations officer of a tank battalion task force in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He helped author the U.S. Army's Counterinsurgency Field Manual.
Then, Ali Allawi, who served as minister of trade and minister of defense under the Interim Iraq Governing Council from 2003 to 2004, and then minister of finance in the Iraqi Transitional Government between 2005 and 2006. He currently teaches at Oxford and has written The Occupation of Iraq: Winning the War, Losing the Peace.
Plus, General Sir Michael Rose, who was best known as the Commander of the U.N. Protection Force in Bosnia in the 1990s. In 2006 he called for the impeachment of Tony Blair for leading England into war in Iraq under false pretenses.
Next, Kanan Mikaya, an Iraqi-born professor of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at Brandeis University. He was one of the leading Arab intellectuals who called for the removal of Sadam Hussein, and he advised the Bush Administration before the invasion of Iraq.
Finally, Peter Galbraith, a senior diplomatic fellow at the Center for Arms Control and Non Proliferation. Among his many books are The End of Iraq and After Iraq: Cleaning Up After America's Biggest Foreign Policy Mistake. [Broadcast Date: January 16, 2008]
