あらすじ・解説
Sometimes, we find ourselves in situations where we haven't much choice. Our heart tells us one thing, while our mind says something entirely different. And sometimes, we're reluctant to admit the person we become through the experience is a much better person than we ever realized was possible.
That's what Veasey learned the hard way after her husband died in 2017. That's when she became her parents' caregiver 24/7 when they both had Alzheimer's. She had been her parents' caregiver for the previous 11 years, but becoming their full-time caregiver was an entirely new experience for her, plus she was adjusting to recent widowhood at the same time. This is a truthful, personal account that bares the author's soul as she struggled to find acceptance, forgiveness, and peace. You'll shed a few tears and laugh along the way. But never forget that this could be you one day - a reluctant caregiver for a loved one.
As Vicki states in the introduction, "No one should enter this world of caregiving blindsided, without some idea of what to expect." Eventually, she was able to look herself in the mirror at night and say, "I'm an amazing caregiver!" No one but another widow can understand what a widow goes through. And no one but another caregiver knows what a dementia caregiver goes through.
Veasey credits her inner strength - which got her through the challenges of caregiving - to her faith in God. God pointed her heart to accepting his plan as an advocate for dementia caregivers and widow(er)s. Scattered throughout the book are caregiving tips from the heart and helpful information to assist dementia caregivers.
Vicki also posts on Facebook, every Monday, videos for dementia caregivers and publishes a twice monthly newsletter for dementia caregivers: Caregiving Tips from the Heart.
