私は汽車の中で旅僧と居合わせた。話を聞くと高野山に籍を置いている旅僧で、宗派は違うが永平寺に訪ねる用があり、今晩は一泊するという。私は若狭へ帰省するところで、一泊しなければならなく、旅僧と敦賀の旅籠屋で同宿することになった。私は夜が更けるまで寝ることができない質なので、旅僧に諸国を行脚したおもしろい話はないかとねだった。 すると、旅僧は若い頃の奇妙な体験談を語りだし、それは、旅僧が飛騨の山越えをした時の話であった。
