हरियाणाराज्ये माहराग्रामे निवसन् फूलसिंहः निम्नजातीयानाम् उद्धरणम् एव जीवनस्य लक्ष्यं भावयति स्म । अथ कदाचित् पार्श्वस्थे 'मोट'नामके ग्रामे चर्मकारबान्धवाः स्वीयोपयोगार्थं कूपं खातवन्तः । किन्तु तत् असहमानाः यवनाः मृत्तिकाभिः तं कूपं पिहितवन्तः । भक्तः फूलसिंहः इदम् अन्याय्यं प्रतिरुद्ध्य सङ्ग्रामम् आरब्धवान् । यावत् पर्यन्तं कूपखननं न भविष्यति तावत् पर्यन्तं आहारसेवनं न करिष्यामि इति प्रतिज्ञातवान् । २४ दिनानि अतीतानि । अन्ते सर्वकारः कूपखननाय यवनानाम् अङ्गीकरणे सफलः जातः ।

In Mahara village of Haryana lived Phool Singh, who dedicated his life to uplifting the lower castes. Once, in the nearby village of Mot, the community of leather workers dug a well for their use. The local Muslims, unable to tolerate this, filled the well with mud. Phool Singh opposed this injustice and began a struggle. He vowed not to eat until the well was restored. For 24 days he fasted. In the end, the authorities succeeded in compelling the Muslims to allow the well to be dug again.

भारतस्य स्वातन्त्र्यसङ्ग्रामकाले बहवः देशभक्ताः यथाशक्ति सङ्ग्रामे भागं वहन्तः स्वस्य देशभक्तिं प्रकटितवन्तः । तेषु अन्यतमः आसीत् कश्चन नापितः यः चेन्नैनगरे (पूर्वं मद्रास् इति तस्य नाम आसीत्) वसति स्म । अनया कथया सः कथं सङ्ग्रामे भागम् ऊढवान् इति ज्ञातुं शक्नुमः ।

During India’s freedom struggle, many patriots expressed their devotion to the nation by participating in the movement in whatever way they could. Among them was a barber living in Chennai (then called Madras). This story shows how he too played his part in the struggle.

कश्चन वणिक् केनचन ज्योतिषेण उक्तम् इति कारणेन महता प्रमाणेन अन्नवितरणं कर्तुम् आरब्धवान् । तस्य मनसि चिन्ता आसीत् 'मम षष्ठपरम्परायां जातानां का अवस्था भवेत्?’ इति । कदाचित् अन्नवितरणसमये कञ्चन निर्धनम् अन्नं नेतुम् आह्वयति सः वणिक् । किन्तु मध्याह्नाय यावत् आवश्यकम् तावत् प्राप्तम् अस्ति । सायङ्कलनिमित्तमपि गृहे तण्डुलादिकम् अस्ति इति निर्धनः वदति । तदा वणिक् चिन्तयति 'एषः निर्धनः श्वस्तनव्यवस्थाविषयकं न चिन्तयति, अहं तु षष्ठपरम्परीयाणां विषये चिन्तयन् अस्मि । धिक् माम्' इति ।

A merchant, following an astrologer’s advice, began distributing food in large amounts. He worried about what would happen to his descendants six generations later. One day, while giving food, he invited a poor man to take some. The poor man replied that he already had enough for the day and rice at home for the evening. The merchant then thought: “This poor man does not worry about tomorrow, while I am anxious about six generations ahead. Shame on me!”

यद्यपि शिवकुमारेण आ गतेभ्यः विंशतेः वर्षेभ्यः लिपिकाररूपेण कार्यं कृतं तथापि पदोन्नतिः न प्राप्ता आसीत् । सहोद्योगिनः मार्गदर्शनेन सः रामं पूजितवान् । वर्षात् अधिकः कालः अतीतः चेदपि तेन किमपि फलं न प्राप्तम् । अपरस्य सहोद्योगिनः मार्गदर्शनेन श्रीकृष्णस्य पूजनम् आरब्धवान् । अग्रे किं भवति इति कथां श्रुत्वा जानन्तु ।

Although Shivakumar had worked as a clerk for twenty years, he never received a promotion. Following the advice of a colleague, he began worshiping Rama. Even after more than a year, he saw no result. Then, guided by another colleague, he started worshiping Krishna. What happens next is the subject of the story.

१८७३ तमवर्षीया घटना एषा । राजप्रतिनिधिः लार्ड् नार्थबुक् नामा कदाचित् स्वामिनः दयानन्दस्य मेलनम् अभिलषितवान् । राजप्रतिनिधिना योग्यः एव सत्कारः व्यवस्थापितः आसीत् । सत्कारस्य समये सम्भाषणावसरे दयानन्दस्वामी निर्भयेन स्वस्य अभिप्रायं प्रकटयति । तस्य निर्भयं वचनं श्रुत्वा राजप्रतिनिधिः क्षणं यावत् आश्चर्येण स्तब्धः जातः ।

This event took place in 1873. The Viceroy, Lord Northbrook, once wished to meet Swami Dayananda. A proper reception was arranged by the Viceroy. During the meeting, in the course of conversation, Swami Dayananda fearlessly expressed his own views. Hearing his bold words, the Viceroy was for a moment astonished and stood speechless.

काशीराज्ये कस्मिंश्चित् ग्रामे आसीत् सुमतिनामा कश्चन निर्धनः परोपकारनिरतः दैवभक्तः यः भिक्षान्नेन जीवनं निर्वहति स्म । 'जीवने परमसुखी कः' इति ज्ञातुम् इच्छा जाता तस्य । सः जनान् प्रष्टुम् च आरब्धवान् यत् तेषां जीवनं सुखमयं स्यात् वा ? इति । पृष्ट्वा पृष्ट्वा अन्ते कश्चन अवदत् यत् सुमतिः नाम कश्चन यः अविवाहितः परोपकारी भिक्षान्नजीवी च अस्ति सः एव सुखी स्यात् इति । अन्यस्य मुखात् स्वस्य प्रशंसां श्रुत्वा सुमतिः सन्तृप्तिं प्राप्य ततः निर्गतवान् ।

In a village of Kashi, there lived a poor man named Sumati. He was devoted to God, lived on alms, and was always engaged in helping others. One day, he wished to know who is truly the happiest in life. He began asking people whether their lives were happy. After asking many, one person finally said: “There is a man named Sumati, unmarried, devoted to service, and living on alms—he alone is truly happy.” Hearing his own praise from another’s mouth, Sumati felt content and went away.

कदाचित् वनविहारार्थं गतवन्तः द्वारकावासिनः तरुणाः कस्मिंश्चित् कूपे कृकलासम् एकम् अपश्यन् । कूपात् कृकलासम् उद्धर्तुम् अशक्नुवन् ते एतं विषयं कृष्णं निवेदितवन्तः । कृष्णः कूपसमीपम् आगत्य लीलया तं कृकलासं कूपात् उद्धृत्य भूमौ अस्थापयत् । तावता कृकलासः देवरूपं प्राप्य कृष्णः साष्टाङ्गं नमस्कृतवान् । इक्ष्वाकोः पुत्रः नृगः शापकारणात् कृकलासः जातः आसीत् । कृष्णस्य करस्य स्पर्शनम् एव तस्य शापविमोचनमार्गः आसीत् ।

Once, some young men of Dwaraka went to the forest for recreation. They saw a lizard in a well. Unable to lift it out, they reported the matter to Krishna. Krishna came to the well and playfully lifted the lizard out, placing it on the ground. Immediately, the lizard assumed a divine form and bowed to Krishna. It was revealed that he was King Nṛga, son of Ikshvaku, who had become a lizard due to a curse. The touch of Krishna’s hand freed him from the curse.

वीरदेवः इति कश्चन दानशीलः राजा । प्रतिदिनं सः उषसि उत्थाय दर्पणे मुखं‌ पश्यति, ततः विहारार्थम् उद्यानं गच्छति च । एवं करणात् सौभाग्यं सिद्ध्येत् इति तस्य चिन्तनम् । अथ एकदा सः स्वमुखम् अदृष्ट्वा एव उद्यानं गतः । ततः किं भवति इति कथायाः विषयः वर्तते ।

Viradeva was a generous king. Every morning he looked at his face in the mirror and then went to the garden, believing this routine would bring him good fortune. One day, however, he went to the garden without looking at his face. What happened next is the subject of the story.
