बेङ्गलूरुनगरे कस्मिंश्चित् पञ्चतारापेते उपहारमन्दिरे केनचन युवकपाचकेन अनुजायाः विवाहनिमित्तं उपहारमन्दिरस्य स्वामिने दशसहस्ररूप्यकाणि ऋणरूपेण प्रार्थितानि। किन्तु तस्य प्रार्थना निराशतायां पर्यवसिता । कदाचित् सुखासने त्यक्ता यानपेटिका दृष्टा युवकेन । ताम् उपहारमन्दिरस्य स्वामिनः समीपे अनयत् । सप्ताहः अतीतः चेदपि पेटिकायाः विचारणार्थं कोऽपि न आगतः इत्यतः स्वामी यानपेटिकातः दशसहस्ररूप्यकाणि निष्कास्य पाचकाय अयच्छत् । किन्तु तन्निराकरोति पाचकः । नवमे दिने पेटिकायाः‌ स्वामी आगत्य 'धनपेटिकायाः रक्षणे करणीभूतः अयं पाचकः' इति ज्ञात्वा दशसहस्ररूप्यकाणि दातुं यदा उद्युक्तः तदा सः पाचकः ऋणरूपेण ददातु इति प्रार्थितवान् । तथैव अकरोत् पेटिकायाः स्वामी ।

In Bengaluru, at a five-star restaurant, a young cook requested a loan of ten thousand rupees from the owner for his younger sister’s wedding. The request was denied. Later, the cook found a suitcase left behind on a sofa and brought it to the owner. A week passed, but no one came to claim it. The owner then took out ten thousand rupees from the suitcase and offered it to the cook. The cook refused. On the ninth day, the true owner of the suitcase arrived. Realizing that the cook had safeguarded the suitcase, the restaurant owner again wished to give him ten thousand rupees. This time, the cook requested it as a loan, and the owner agreed.

१८५७ तमे वर्षे कोलकाताविश्वविद्यालयतः बि.ए परीक्षायाम् अधिकान् अङ्कान् प्राप्तवन्तं बङ्किमचन्द्रवर्यं तदानीन्तनः राज्यपालः हालेण्ड्-वर्यः स्वगृहम् आहूतवान् । ततः 'भवान् अद्य आरभ्य उपदण्डाधिकारिरूपेण कार्यारम्भं करोतु' इति बङ्किमचन्द्रम् उक्तवान् । परन्तु बङ्किमचन्द्रः राज्यपालाय धन्यवादान् समर्प्य अवद्त् 'उद्योगस्वीकारविषये मया मम पिता प्रष्टव्यः । तस्य विचारानुसारम् एव निर्णयं करिष्यामि' इति । पुत्रस्य मुखात् एव प्रवृत्तं समग्रं श्रुत्वा नितरां सन्तुष्टः पिता, उपदण्डाधिकारिपदस्य स्वीकाराय पुत्राय अनुमतिं दत्तवान् ।

In 1857, Bankim Chandra, having secured high marks in the B.A. examination from Calcutta University, was invited by the then Governor, Halliday, to his residence. The Governor said to him: “From today, you shall begin work as a Deputy Magistrate”. Bankim Chandra, offering thanks, replied: “Before accepting any appointment, I must consult my father. I will decide according to his advice”. Hearing such words directly from his son, the father was deeply pleased and gave his consent for Bankim Chandra to accept the post of Deputy Magistrate.

कदाचित् मोहननामकः कश्चित् यदा धनार्जनं कृत्वा स्वग्रामं प्रति आगच्छन् आसीत् तदा कश्चन वञ्चकः तम् अनुसृतवान् । रात्रौ कस्यांचन धर्मशालायांं भोजनं कृत्वा शयनम् अकुरुताम् । मध्यरात्रे वञ्चकः मोहनस्य पोटलीवस्त्रम् उद्घाट्य ज्ञातवान् यत् तत्र धनं नास्ति इति । एवमेव अग्रिमदिने अन्यस्यां धर्मशालायाम् अपि वञ्चकेन मोहनस्य धनं न प्राप्तम् । एतस्य समीपे धनमेव नास्ति इति मत्वा यदा वञ्चकः अन्यस्मिन् मार्गे गमनाय उद्युक्तः तदा मोहनः तं स्वगृहं भोजनार्थम् आहूतवान् । सम्भाषणावसरे मोहनः अवदत् 'धनं तु तव पार्श्वे एव असीत् । रात्रौ भवतः कटस्य अधः पोटलीवस्त्रं स्थापयामि स्म । तव समीपे पुरुषार्थरूपि धनम् अस्ति एव' इति उक्त्वा तस्मै सहस्ररूप्यकाणि दत्त्वा 'तेन कमपि व्यवसायं कुरु' इति अवदत् । वञ्चकः मोहनस्य चरणयोः अपतत्, क्षमां च अयाचत ।

Once, a man named Mohan, after earning some money, was returning to his village. A trickster followed him. At night, both stayed in a rest-house, ate, and slept. At midnight, the trickster opened Mohan’s bundle but found no money. The next day, in another rest-house, he again searched but found nothing. Thinking Mohan had no wealth, the trickster prepared to leave by another road. Mohan then invited him home for a meal. During their conversation, Mohan said: “The real wealth was always with you. At night I placed my bundle under your waistcloth. True wealth lies in human effort”. Saying this, Mohan gave him a thousand rupees and advised: “Use this to start some honest work”. The trickster fell at Mohan’s feet, begged forgiveness, and was transformed.
