कदाचित् आखेटाय गतवता चन्दनपुरस्य दयावता राज्ञा उसमानेन किञ्चिदपि न लब्धम् । पिपासया व्याकुलेन तेन कुत्रापि जलं न प्राप्तम् । सः भूमौ पतितः । कश्चन कृषिकः राजानं गृहम् आनाय्य जलभोजनादिकम् अयच्छत् । कृषकस्य सेवातः सन्तुष्टः राजा तस्मै किमपि दातुम् ऐच्छत् । यदि किमपि आवश्यकं भविष्यति तर्हि भवतः प्रासादम् आगमिष्यामि इति उक्तवान् कृषकः । अग्रे कदाचित् राजा हस्तौ उपरि गगनदिशि प्रसार्य 'कुरान' नामकस्य धर्मग्रन्थस्य पठनं करोति स्म, तदा कृषकः आगच्छत् । भगवन्तं सुखशान्त्यादिकं याचन्तं राजानं दृष्ट्वा कृषकः अवदत् 'भवान् अपि मत्सदृशः कश्चन याचकः एव । याचकः याचकं न याचेत् । अतः अहं किमपि भवन्तं न याचामि' इत्युक्त्वा ततः निर्गतः ।

Once, the compassionate king Usman of Chandanapura went hunting but found nothing. Overcome with thirst, he collapsed, unable to find water. A farmer brought him home and offered food and drink. Grateful, the king wished to reward him. The farmer replied, “If ever I need something, I will come to your palace”. Later, when the king was reading the holy book Qur’an, raising his hands to the sky and praying for peace and happiness, the farmer arrived. Seeing the king himself as a supplicant before God, the farmer said: “You are also a beggar like me. A beggar should not beg from another beggar. Therefore, I will not ask you for anything.” Saying this, he departed.

कदाचित् किञ्चन यात्रिकदलं मरुस्थलम् अतिक्रामत् आसीत् । तस्मिन् मरुस्थले जलं, भोजनादिकं किमपि न असीत् तस्य दलस्य सदस्यानां निकटे । एकस्मिन् स्थले ते बहूनि फलानि धारयतः वृक्षान् दृष्ट्वा सर्वे अपि वृक्षं प्रति अधावन् । तदा दलनायकः तान् निरुद्ध्य तानि फलानि उपयोगयोग्यानि वा न वा इति परीक्षां कृतवान् । तदा तैः ज्ञातं यत् तानि फलानि विषयुक्तानि इति । एवंप्रकारेण दलनायकस्य योग्यताकारणतः दलस्य रक्षणम् अभवत् । अतः अस्माभिः अनायासेन प्राप्तस्य वस्तुनः उपयोगितायाः परीक्षणं कृत्वा एव उपयोगः करणीया ।

Once, a group of travellers was crossing a desert. They had no water or food with them. At one place, they saw a tree bearing many fruits and rushed toward it. The leader of the group stopped them and tested whether the fruits were safe to eat. It was then discovered that the fruits were poisonous. Because of the leader’s wisdom, the entire group was saved. Before using anything obtained easily, one must test its usefulness and safety.

कदाचित् लुण्ठाकाः कञ्चित् बौद्धभिक्षुम् आक्रम्य दण्डेन विध्यन्तः कर्णम् आकर्षन्तः विचित्रं मनोरञ्जनं प्राप्नुवन्ति स्म । तद् दृष्टवतः भिक्षोः नेत्रे अश्रुधारापूर्णे जाते । रोदनशीलं भिक्षुं दृष्ट्वा ते उपहासं कृतवन्तः । तदा भिक्षुः अवदत् 'अहं भवतः निमित्तीकृत्य रोदिमि । आरोग्यवन्तः बुद्धिमन्तः अस्य देशस्य निर्मातारः भवन्तः । तत्कार्यं विहाय ईदृशेषु दुष्कार्येषु मग्नाः सन्तः जीवनं व्यर्थं कुर्वन्तः सन्ति खलु इति रोदिमि' इति । एतादृश्यां वेदनामय्यां स्थित्यामपि अयं भिक्षुः अस्मद्विषये चिन्तयति इति लुण्ठकानां नेत्रेषु अश्रुधाराप्रवाहः जातः । ते भिक्षुं क्षमां सम्प्रार्थ्य तदीयाः शिष्याः जाताः ।

Once, some ruffians attacked a Buddhist monk, beating him and pulling his ears for amusement. Seeing this, tears filled the monk’s eyes. The ruffians mocked him, but the monk said: “I weep not for myself, but for you. Healthy and intelligent, you are the builders of this land. Yet, instead of noble work, you waste your lives in such misdeeds”. Hearing this, the ruffians were moved. Realizing that even in pain the monk cared for them, tears flowed from their eyes. They begged his forgiveness and became his disciples.
