कदाचित् महान्-विष्णुभक्तः राजा अम्बरीषः साधनद्वादशीव्रतम् आरब्धवान् । इन्द्रः तस्य व्रतस्य भङ्गार्थं महातपस्विनं दूर्वासमुनिं नियोजितवान् । सप्तसहस्रेण शिष्यैः सह आगतस्य मुनिवरस्य विशेषसत्कारं कृतवान् अम्बरीषः । दूर्वासमुनिः शिष्यैः सह आह्निकादिकं कर्तुं नदीं गत्वा सोद्देशम् एव शीघ्रं न आगतः । द्वादश्याः सूर्योदयसमयः आसन्नः आसीत् । व्रतभङ्गः न भवेदिति कारणतः अम्बरीषः देवाय नैवेद्यम् अर्पयित्वा स्वयं च तीर्थं सेवमानः पारणां समापितवान् । नदीतः प्रत्यागतः दूर्वासः क्रुद्धः सन् अम्बरीषस्य हननार्थं तपोबलेन काञ्चित् राक्षसीं सृष्टवान् । भक्तस्य रक्षणाय विष्णोः सुदर्शनचक्रं राक्षस्याः संहारं कृत्वा दूर्वासस्य संहराय उद्युक्तम् अभवत् । अनन्तरं विष्णोः आदेशानुसारं दूर्वासः अम्बरीषस्य शरणं गतवान् । सुदर्शनचक्रं ततः प्रत्यागच्छत् ।

King Ambarisha, a devoted follower of Vishnu, observed the Dvadashi fast. To disrupt it, Indra sent Sage Durvasa. Ambarisha honored him, but when Durvasa delayed at the river and sunrise neared, Ambarisha completed the ritual by offering food to the deity and sipping holy water. Angered, Durvasa created a demoness to kill him. To protect his devotee, Vishnu’s Sudarshana Chakra destroyed the demoness and turned against Durvasa himself. Terrified, Durvasa sought refuge in Vishnu, who directed him to Ambarisha. When Durvasa bowed before the king, the Chakra withdrew.

कदाचित् प्रसीदः प्रजापतिः सहभोजम् आयोजितवान् यत्र देवाः दानवाः चा निमन्त्रिताः । परस्परं कलहादिकं कुर्युः इति भीत्या तेषां पृथक्-पृथक् भोजनव्यवस्था कृता । प्रासादस्य प्रवेशद्वारे आगन्तुकानां द्वावपि हस्तौ एकैकेन काष्ठपट्टकेन हस्तं वस्त्ररज्जुभिः च बद्धवा तेषां तेषां भोजनस्थलस्य मार्गं दर्शितवन्तः । प्रथमं दानवभोजनकक्षं गतवान् प्रजापतिः । स्वमुखे ग्रासम् अर्पयितुम् असमर्थाः दानवाः तारस्वरेण प्रजापतेः इमां धूर्ततां निन्दन्तः आसन् । ततः देवानां भोजनागारं यदा प्रविष्टवान् तदा एकैकस्य पात्रस्य पुरतः द्वौ द्वौ देवौ परस्परं सांमुख्येन उपविष्टौ भोज्यानि अन्योन्यस्य मुखे समर्प्य तानि आस्वादयन्तौ आस्ताम् । अस्यां विवशायामपि स्थितौ देवैः कश्चन उपायः आसादितः इति दानवेभ्यः दर्शितं प्रजापतिना

Once, Prajapati arranged a grand feast, inviting both gods and demons. Fearing quarrels, he seated them separately. At the palace entrance, each guest’s hands were tied to wooden planks with cloth ropes, so they could not bend their arms to feed themselves. When Prajapati visited the demons’ hall first, they were frustrated, unable to bring food to their mouths, and angrily accused him of trickery. Later, in the gods’ hall, he saw pairs of gods seated opposite each other. Instead of trying to feed themselves, they offered food into one another’s mouths and happily enjoyed the meal. Thus, Prajapati showed the demons that even in helpless situations, the gods had found a wise solution—cooperation.

कस्मिंश्चित् वनप्रदेशे पुष्पिकाणां राज्ञी अतीव लावण्यवती अपि रूपगर्विता, व्यवहारेण सा अतिक्रूरा च आसीत् । मायया सा अप्सरसः रूपं धृत्वा मृगयार्थं वनप्रदेशम् आगतान् राजकुमारान् विलोभ्य तान् अङ्गुष्ठमात्राकारेण कृत्वा स्वर्णपञ्जरे स्थापयति स्म । तान् विविधान् नृत्यप्रकारान् अध्यापयति स्म । यदि नृत्यं न कुर्वन्ति तर्हि स्वर्णसूचिकया विद्ध्वा पीडयति स्म । अथ कदाचित् वनप्रदेशम् आगतायाः वनदेवतायाः दृष्टिः तत्रत्यैः स्वर्णपञ्जरैः आकृष्टा । प्रवृत्तं सर्वं श्रुत्वा वनदेवता पुष्पिकाराज्ञीम् अशपत् 'मधुमक्षिकाराज्ञी भूत्वा मौक्तिकवर्णप्रासादे निवासं करिष्यति । बृहता शरीरेण कदापि प्रासादात् बहिः आगन्तुं न शक्नुयात्' इति । तदा प्रभृति मधुकोषे आमरणं बन्धनवासं सहते मधुमक्षिकाराज्ञी ।

In a certain forest region, there was a queen of the flower-maidens. Though extremely beautiful, she was proud of her looks and cruel in behavior. By illusion, she took the form of a celestial nymph and enticed princes who had come to the forest for hunting. She shrank them to the size of a thumb and kept them in golden cages, forcing them to learn various dances. If they refused, she would pierce them with a golden needle and cause pain. One day, a forest goddess came to that region and was drawn by the sight of the golden cages. Learning what had happened, she cursed the flower-queen: “You shall become the queen of bees and live in a pearl-colored palace. With your large body, you will never be able to leave it”. From that time onward, the bee-queen has endured lifelong imprisonment within the honeycomb.
