कस्यचन लघुदेशस्य राजा सुशर्मा प्रजानां सुखं कथं स्यात् इति सर्वदा चिन्तयति स्म । अथ कदाचित् इन्धुधरः इति राजा यदा तस्य देशम् आगतः तदा सुशर्माणम् अपृच्छत् 'सुविशाले अपि भवतः देशे कथं शान्तिसुखादयः अधिकाः । मम राज्ये सान्तिसुखादिकं वर्धयितुं मया किं करणीयम् ?’ इति । तदा राजा इन्दुधरः अवदत् 'मम राज्ये सत्यप्रेमन्यायत्यागाः इति चत्वारः प्रहरिणः सन्ति । ते असत्यात्, घृणातः, अन्यायात्, स्वार्थात् च मम मद्देशस्य च रक्षणं कुर्वन्ति' इति । तदा इन्धुधरः 'मम देशे अपि तेषां पोषणाय योग्यां व्यवस्थां करिष्यामि' इति ।

In a certain small kingdom, the king named Susharma always pondered how his people might live happily. One day, when King Indudhara came to his land, Susharma asked him: "In your vast kingdom, how is it that peace and happiness are greater? What should I do to increase peace and happiness in my own realm?". Then King Indudhara replied: "In my kingdom, there are four guardians—Truth, Love, Justice, and Renunciation. They protect me and my land from falsehood, hatred, injustice, and selfishness". Hearing this, Susharma said: "I too shall establish a proper system in my country to nurture these guardians".

कस्मिंश्चित् विद्यालये परीक्षापरिणामस्य घोषणस्य अनन्तरं कश्चन छात्रः उत्थाय 'मम परीक्षापरिणामः भवता न उक्तः' इति अवदत् । तदा शिक्षकः अवदत् 'त्वं ज्वरादिकारणम् उक्त्वा दीर्घकालं यावत् कक्ष्यायाम् अनुपस्थितः आसीः । अतः त्वम् अनुत्तीर्णः स्याः । तस्मात् एव आवल्यां तव नाम नास्ति' इति । 'मम अनुत्तीर्णता भवितुं न अर्हति, श्रीमन्' इति सः छात्रः आत्मविश्वासेन अवदत् । एवं वादः प्रतिवादः च प्राचलत् तयोः मध्ये । छात्रः यदा यदा उत्तीर्णताविषये वादम् अनुवर्तितवान् तदा तदा शिक्षकः तस्य दण्डं वर्धितवान् । तावता लिपिकारः आगत्य 'एतस्य छात्रस्य नाम प्रथमश्रेणीं प्राप्य उत्तीर्णानाम् आवल्याम् आसीत् । अनवधानात् अस्माभिः न लक्षितम्' इति अवदत् । आत्मविश्वासस्य खनी इव स्थितस्य बालकस्य नाम 'राजेन्द्रप्रसादः' यः भाविनि काले भारतस्य प्रथमराष्ट्रपतिः जातः ।

In a certain school, after the announcement of the examination results, a student stood up and said, “My examination result has not been declared by you”. Then the teacher replied, “You had remained absent from the class for a long time, giving the reason for fever and other ailments. Therefore, you must have failed. That is why your name is not in the list”. The student, with confidence, said, “My failure is not justified, Sir”. Thus, an argument and counter-argument continued between the two. Whenever the student insisted on his success, the teacher increased his punishment. Meanwhile, the clerk came and said, “This student’s name was actually in the list of those who passed with first class. We failed to notice it due to oversight.” The boy, who stood firm like a mine of self-confidence, was named Rajendra Prasad, who in the future became the first President of India.

कदाचित् पर्वतारोहणसमये कश्चन शिष्यः रमणमहर्षिम् अपृच्छत् 'कर्माचरणस्य कर्मयोगस्य च कः भेद:?’ इति । तदा महर्षिः केनचित् दृष्टान्तमाध्यमेन विवृणोति यत् 'भारभावः यतः अनुभूयेत तत् कर्म । भारवहने लाघवता अनुभूयेत यत् सः कर्मयोगः । जीवने बहूनि श्रमत्यागसेवादीनि कार्याणि करणीयानि भवन्ति । तानि भवन्ति अपरिहार्याणि । तस्मात् वयं खेदेन, अनिच्छया, अप्रसन्नमनसा वा तेषाम् अनुष्ठानं चिन्तयामः । यत् कार्यं क्रियते तदेव यदि प्रीत्या क्रियते तर्हि सः भवति 'कर्मयोगः' । कर्मसु कौशलम् एव कर्मयोगः' इति ।

Perhaps during a mountain climb, a disciple once asked Ramana Maharshi: ‘What is the difference between mere action and Karma Yoga?’. Then Maharshi explained through an example: ‘Where a sense of burden is felt, that is mere action. Where lightness is experienced in carrying the burden, that is Karma Yoga. In life, many tasks such as labor, renunciation, service, and duties must be performed. They are unavoidable. Therefore, we often think of performing them with fatigue, reluctance, or an unhappy mind. But if the same work is done with joy, then it becomes Karma Yoga. Skill in action itself is Karma Yoga’.
