श्रीमतः गोपालकृष्णगोखलेवर्यस्य बाल्ये प्रवृता घटना एषा । कदाचित् शिक्षकः कांश्चन प्रश्नान् दत्तवान् । यद्यपि सर्वे छात्राः प्रश्नानाम् उत्तराणि अलिखन् तथापि गोखलेवर्यस्य एव सर्वेषां प्रश्नानाम् उत्तराणि उत्तमरीत्या अलिखत् । एतेन सन्तुष्टः शिक्षकः भूरि प्रशंसां कृत्वा तस्मै पुरस्कारं दातुं यदा उद्युक्तः तदा रोदनम् आरब्धं गोखलवर्येण । 'किमर्थं रोदिति ?’ इति शिक्षकेण पृष्टे अवदत् गोखलेवर्यः 'एतेषु उत्तरेषु एकस्य प्रश्नस्य उत्तरं मम मित्रं पृष्ट्वा अलिखम् । भवन्तं वञ्चितवान् अस्मि । अतः अहं न पुरस्कारार्हः, अपि तु दण्डनार्हः' इति । तस्य सत्यवचेन सन्तुष्टः शिक्षकः 'भवतः सत्यप्रियतायै पुरस्कारः दीयते' इति उक्तवान् ।

This is an incident from the childhood of the revered Gopal Krishna Gokhale. Once, a teacher gave some questions to the students. Although all the students wrote answers, only Gokhale wrote all of them in the best manner. The teacher, pleased with him, praised him greatly and was about to give him a reward. But Gokhale began to cry. When the teacher asked the reason, Gokhale said: “For one of these answers, I asked my friend and wrote it down. I have deceived you. Therefore, I am not worthy of a reward, but rather of punishment”. Hearing his truthful words, the teacher was deeply satisfied and said: “This reward is given to you for your love of truth”.

केरले पूर्वं कश्चन नम्पूतरिः दरिद्रः चेदपि अतिथिसत्कारप्रियः । सः प्रतिदिनं कमपि जनं भोजनार्थम् आह्वयति स्म । किन्तु पत्न्यै श्रीदेव्यै पत्युः एषः स्वभावः दारिद्र्यकारणात् न रोचते स्म । एकस्मिन् दिने यदा नम्पूतरिः त्रिभिः अथितिभिः साकं गृहम् आगच्छत् तदा पत्युः एतादृशस्य शीलस्य अन्त्यं कर्तुम् ऐच्छत् श्रीदेवी । पतिः स्नानार्थम् अगच्छत् अतिथयः च बुभुक्षिताः सन्तः उपविष्टवन्तः आसन् । पाकशालायां मुसलं पूजयन्तीं श्रीदेवीं दृष्ट्वा अतिथयः तस्य कारणम् अपृच्छन् । तदा श्रीदेवी अवदत् 'भोजनानन्तरं मम पतिः मुसलेन अतिथीन् प्रहरति' इति । एतत् श्रुत्वा अतिथयः अधावन् । तदनन्तरं न को‌Sपि तस्य गृहं प्रति भोजनार्थम् आगतवान् ।

In Kerala, there once lived a Namboodiri who, though poor, was very fond of hospitality. Every day he would invite someone home for a meal. His wife, Sridevi, however, disliked this habit because of their poverty. One day, the Namboodiri returned home with three guests. Wishing to put an end to her husband’s practice, Sridevi devised a plan. While her husband went to bathe, the hungry guests sat waiting. In the kitchen, they saw Sridevi worshipping a pestle and asked her the reason. She replied: “After meals, my husband strikes the guests with this pestle”. Hearing this, the frightened guests ran away. From then on, no one came to their house for food.

कदाचित् गान्धिवर्यः स्वस्य आश्रमे कस्मिंश्चित् कार्ये व्यस्तः आसीत् । तस्य लेखन्याः मषी समाप्तप्राया जाता । अन्येद्युः सः लेखनार्थम् आगत्य यदा उपाविशत् तदा सा लेखनी तत्र न असीत् । सहोद्योगिनं यदा अपृच्छत् तदा सः अवदत् यत् यतः सा लेखनी अतिप्राचीना जाता अतः तां बहिः अक्षिपम् इति । तत्क्षणे एव गान्धिवर्यः अतीवक्रुद्धः जातः । आश्रमे सर्वे अपि लेखन्याः अन्वेषणम् आरब्धवन्तः । अन्ते आश्रमस्य पुरतः केदारखण्डे पतिता लेखनी प्राप्ता । तां प्राप्य गान्धिवर्यः अवदत् 'क्षुद्रवस्तुनः अपि मूल्यं न कदापि न्यूनम् । अल्पमूल्यकानाम् अपि वस्तुनां महत्त्वं वर्तते अस्माकं जीवने' इति ।

Once, Gandhi was busy with some work in his ashram. His pen had nearly run out of ink. The next day, when he came to write, the pen was missing. On asking a co-worker, he was told: “Since the pen had become very old, I threw it away”. Immediately, Gandhi became very upset. Everyone in the ashram began searching for the pen, and at last it was found lying in a field outside. Holding it, Gandhi said: “Even the smallest object should never be undervalued. Things of little cost still hold great importance in our lives”.
