राजा बृहद्रथः मगधदेशस्य राजा । पुष्यमित्रः सेनापतिः । विदेशीयं ग्रीक्सैन्यं न प्रतिप्रेषितं चेत् राज्यस्य भारतस्य च महती हानिः स्यात् इति पुष्यमित्रस्य कथनेन अपि राजा ताटस्थ्यनीतिः अनुसरणीया इति अवदत् । पुष्यमित्रः देशस्य हितमेव मुख्यं मन्यमानः राजविरोधम् अपि उपेक्ष्य शत्रुदलीयानां निग्रहाय उद्युक्तः अभवत् । पुष्यमित्रस्य कथा कालिदासेन मालविकाग्निमित्रे उपवर्णिता अस्ति ।

King Brihadratha ruled Magadha, with Pushyamitra as his commander. When foreign Greek armies threatened, Pushyamitra warned that if they were not repelled, both the kingdom and India would suffer greatly. Yet the king insisted on a policy of neutrality. Pushyamitra, considering the nation’s welfare more important than royal command, prepared to confront and suppress the enemy forces. This episode of Pushyamitra’s resolve is described by Kalidasa in Malavikagnimitra.

बालगङ्गाधरतिलकः विधिशास्त्रस्य अध्ययनानान्तरं न्यायवादिवृत्तित्वं न इच्छति यतः तत्र प्रतिदिनं प्रतिपदम् असत्यं वक्तव्यं भवति इति । सर्वाकारीयम् उद्योगम् अपि न इच्छति सर्वकारस्य दास्यताकारणतः । सः कस्मिंश्चित् विद्यालये अध्यापकवृत्तित्वम् आरब्धवान् । तदीयं मासिकं वेतनं त्रीणि रूप्यकाणि इति । तिलकस्य उदात्तं चिन्तारहितं च व्यवहारं दृष्ट्वा तस्य सुहृत् महत् आश्चर्यम् अनुभूतवान् ।

After studying law, Bal Gangadhar Tilak did not wish to practice as a lawyer, because in that profession one had to speak untruths at every step. He also did not want to take up government service, as it meant servitude to the rulers. Instead, he began working as a teacher in a school. His monthly salary was only three rupees. Seeing Tilak’s noble, worry-free conduct, his friend was greatly astonished.

कश्चन महात्मा भगवद्दर्शनस्य विषयं कञ्चन सज्जनं वदति - 'ईश्वरः अस्माकम् अन्तः एव तिष्ठति । मोहमायादिकारणतः वयं तस्य दर्शनं प्राप्तुं न शक्नुमः । भगवान् द्रष्टव्यः चेत् सर्वादौ मोहमायादयः त्यक्तव्याः' इति । 'अद्यैव भगवद्दर्शनार्थं प्रयासस्य आरम्भं करिष्यामि' इत्युक्त्वा प्रणम्य च ततः प्रस्थितवान् सः सज्जनः ।

A saint once explained to a devotee about the vision of God: “The Lord dwells within us. Because of delusion and illusion, we are unable to perceive Him. If one wishes to see God, first these veils of delusion must be cast aside.” Hearing this, the devotee bowed and said, “From today itself I will begin the effort to attain the vision of God,” and departed with resolve.
