जपान्देशे यदा भगवतः बुद्धस्य महान् प्रभावः आसीत् तदा प्रवृत्ता घटना एषा । सर्वत्र शान्तिः प्रवृत्ता आसीत् इति कारणतः युद्धं क्वापि न प्रवर्तते स्म । अतः बहवः भटाः वृत्तिहीनाः जाताः । कश्चन भटः वृत्त्यभावात् नितरां परितपति स्म । तस्य गृहे एकवारमपि भोजनं प्राप्तुम् असमर्थं जातम् । सः बुद्धमन्दिरं गत्वा तत्र स्थितौ भिक्षू नमस्कृत्य स्वस्य दैन्यस्थितिं विवृत्य 'कापि वृत्तिः परिकल्प्यताम्' इति प्रार्थितवान् । तस्य दैन्यस्थितिं द्रष्टुम् अशक्नुवन् तयोः एकः भिक्षुः बुद्धमूर्तेः प्रभावलीम् अपनीय भटाय दत्त्वा 'एतत् विक्रीय प्राप्तेन धनेन स्वस्य कष्टं परिहर' इति अवदत् । तेन कुपितम् अन्यं भिक्षुम् उद्दिश्य अवदत् 'मूर्तेः अलकरणस्य रक्षणात् अपि आर्तिनाशनम् एव परमं प्रमुखम्' ।

This story took place in Japan when the influence of Lord Buddha was very strong. Because peace prevailed everywhere, wars did not occur, and many soldiers became unemployed. One such soldier suffered greatly due to the lack of livelihood, and his family could not even get food once a day. In despair, he went to a Buddhist temple, bowed to the monks there, and explained his miserable condition, requesting them to find some means of livelihood for him. Seeing his suffering, one of the monks removed a precious ornament from the statue of Buddha and gave it to the soldier, saying, “Sell this and use the money to overcome your hardship.” Also addressed his companion, “More important than protecting the ornament of the statue is relieving the suffering of a distressed person”.

कदाचित् कक्ष्यायाम् एकैकशः आगत्य श्लोककथनम् आरब्धवन्तः छात्राः । आदौ एकः छात्रः भीत्या आगत्य श्लोककथनम् आरब्धवान् । अर्धं यावत् श्रावितं तावता शिक्षकः 'अलम्! स्थगय !’ इति असूचयत । सः म्लानमुखः सन् प्रत्यागतवान् । एवमेव दशाधिकाः छात्राः अपि अध्यापकस्य 'स्थगय' इति आदेशं श्रुत्वा श्लोककथनं स्थगयित्वा स्वस्थानं गतवन्तः । यदा धीरजः इति छात्रः आगत्य कथनम् आरब्धवान् तदा 'स्थगय' इति अध्यापकेन उक्तं चेदपि सः समग्रं श्लोकं श्रावयित्वा अगच्छत् । अध्यापकः अवदत् 'श्लोकं समग्रतया श्रावयितुम् यद्यपि सर्वे अपि शक्ताः तथापि न्यूनेन आत्मविश्वासकारणेन कथनं स्थगयित्वा स्वस्थानम् अगच्छन् । आत्मविश्वासपरीक्षणाय एव मया भवन्तः श्लोककथनाय प्रेरिताः । तत्र धीरजः एकः एव उत्तीर्णः' इति ।

In a classroom, students were called one by one to recite a verse. The first student, trembling with fear, began his recitation, but before he could complete it, the teacher interrupted saying, “Enough, stop!” The boy, with a sad face, returned to his seat. In the same way, more than ten students attempted, but each was stopped midway by the teacher’s command and went back to their places. Finally, when a student named Dheeraj came forward and began his recitation, the teacher again said “Stop!” Yet Dheeraj, with confidence, continued and completed the entire verse before returning. The teacher then explained that although all the students were capable of reciting the verse fully, most lacked self-confidence. He had arranged this exercise only to test their inner courage. Among all, only Dheeraj passed the test by showing confidence and determination.

'लोके वीरेषु कः श्रेष्ठः?’ इति विषये प्रवृत्ता काचित् चर्चा कदाचित् देवलोके इन्द्रसभां प्राप्ता । तदवसरे 'वर्धमाननामा यः भूलोके तिष्ठति सः एव वीरेषु श्रेष्ठः' इति इन्द्रः अवदत् । 'सः तु बालः' इति उपेक्षया अवदत् कश्चन सङ्गमनामकः देवपुरुषः । इन्द्रः तं बालं परीक्षितुम् अर्हन्ति इति यदा अवदत् तदा सङ्गमः सर्परूपं धृत्वा यत्र वर्धमानः मित्रैः सह क्रीडन् आसीत् तत् उद्यानम् अगच्छत् । तं सर्पं दृष्ट्वा सर्वे भीताः किन्तु वर्धमानः दक्षिणहस्तेन फणायाः अधोभागं गृहीत्वा पादं तस्य पुच्छे संस्थाप्य बलात् तस्य कण्ठभागं निपीडितवान् । दंष्टुं पुच्छेन प्रहर्तुं वा न शक्तं सर्पेण । स्वस्य पराजयम् अङ्गीकृत्य सङ्गमः सर्परूपं‌ परित्यज्य नैजरूपेण प्रत्यक्षीभूय महावीम् आशिषा अनुगृहीतवान् ।

Once, in the heavenly court of Indra, a discussion arose about who was the greatest among heroes in the world. Indra declared that a boy named Vardhamana, living on earth, was indeed the greatest. A divine being named Sangama dismissed this, saying that Vardhamana was only a child. Indra then suggested that even as a child, his courage was extraordinary and worthy of being tested. Sangama agreed and took the form of a serpent, descending to the garden where Vardhamana was playing with his friends. Seeing the serpent, all the children fled in fear, but Vardhamana stood firm with courage. He seized the lower part of the serpent’s hood with his right hand, pressed its tail with his foot, and tightly held its neck. The serpent tried to bite or strike with its tail but could not escape. Accepting defeat, Sangama abandoned his serpent form, appeared in his true divine form, and blessed Vardhamana for his unmatched bravery.
