कदाचित् गुरुकुले मगधराजकुमारं गुरुः विना कारणं दण्डेन ताडितवान् आसीत् । वेदनाम् अनुभवन् 'किमर्थम् एवं मम दण्डनं क्रियते ?’ इति राजकुमारेण पृष्टे गुरुः गाम्भीर्येण अवदत् 'कालान्तरेण स्वयं ज्ञास्यते त्वया' इति । कालान्तरेण राजकुमारः सिंहासनम् आरूढवान् । कदाचित् गुरुः तं द्रष्टुम् आगतः । राजा तं यथोचितं सत्कृत्य सम्भाषणावसरे गुरुकुले विना कारणं दण्डनस्य कारणम् अपृच्छत् । गुरुः हसन् अवदत् 'तस्मिन् दिने मया न प्रहृतम्, अपि तु बोधितम् । अकृतापराधाः यदा दण्ड्येरन् तर्हि तैः कीदृशी वेदना प्राप्येत इति मया ज्ञापनीयम् आसीत् । सम्यक् विचार्य एव त्वया दण्ड्याः दण्डनीयाः....’ इति । 'आजीवनं भवतः उपदेशस्य अनुगुणम् एव व्यवहरिष्यामि अहम्' इति विनयेन अवदत् राजा ।

Once in a gurukula, the teacher struck the prince of Magadha with a punishment, seemingly without reason. Feeling the pain, the prince asked: ‘Why am I being punished in this way?’ The teacher, with gravity, replied: ‘In time, you will understand for yourself’. Later, the prince ascended the throne. One day, the teacher came to see him. The king welcomed him with due honor, and during their conversation asked about the reason for that punishment in the gurukula. The teacher smiled and said: ‘On that day, I did not strike you, but rather taught you. I wished to show you what kind of suffering is felt when the innocent are punished. So that when you judge, you may punish only after proper consideration’. The king humbly replied: ‘Throughout my life, I shall act in accordance with your teaching’.

कस्मिंश्चित् प्रवचने कश्चन पुरुषः महात्मानम् अपृच्छत् यत् जीवने कथं सर्वाः समास्याः निवार्य तृप्त्या जीवनं यापयितुं शक्यम् इति । तदा माहात्मना कांश्चन सजीवान् मण्डूकान् आनाय्य काञ्चित् तुलाम् अपि आनाय्य तेषां मण्डूकाननां भारं ज्ञात्वा वद इति उक्तम् । अल्पे एव काले तेन पुरुषेण ज्ञातं यत् मण्डूकानां तोलनं कियते क्लेशाय इति । तदा महात्मा अवदत् 'यथा मण्डूकाः एकत्र स्थापयितुं न शक्याः तथैव समस्यानां सर्वासां निवारणम् अपि न शक्यम् । उद्यमः, साहसः, धैर्यं, बुद्धिः, शक्तिः, पराक्रमः इत्येते षट् गुणाः यदा अस्मासु स्युः तर्हि सर्वान् क्लेशान् निवार्य अग्रे गन्तुं शक्नुयाम वयम्' इति ।

In a certain discourse, a man once asked a great soul: ‘In life, how is it possible to overcome all difficulties and live with contentment?’. Then the Mahatma brought some living frogs and a weighing scale, and asked the man to measure their weight. Within a short time, the man realized that weighing the frogs was troublesome. The Mahatma then said: ‘Just as frogs cannot be kept together in one place, in the same way, it is not possible to eliminate all problems at once. But when we possess six qualities—effort, courage, patience, intelligence, strength, and valor—then we can overcome all difficulties and move forward’.

कश्चन तरुणः विद्याभ्यासं समाप्य स्वग्रामं गत्वा अध्ययन् कुर्वन् यथाशक्ति अध्यापनम् अपि आरब्धवान् । तस्य उत्कृष्टेन अध्यापनेन दिने दिने तस्य कक्ष्यायां छात्रसङ्ख्या प्रवृद्धा । तेन अन्ये अध्यापकाः असूयां प्राप्य छात्राणां मातापितरौ मिथ्या उक्त्वा छात्राः यथा कक्ष्यां न गच्छेयुः तथा कृतवन्तः । एतत् कुतन्त्रं जानन् अपि सः तरुणः अधीरः न जातः । कांश्चन शङ्कून् पुरतः संस्थाप्य सः अध्यापनम् आरब्धवान् । द्वित्राणां दिनानाम् अनन्तरं ग्रामीणाः तस्य अध्यापनश्रद्धाम् असूयग्रस्तानां कुतन्त्रं च ज्ञात्वा तं तरुणं क्षमां याचित्वा 'भवता एव अस्मदीयाः बालाः पाठनीयाः' इति प्रार्थितवन्तः । शङ्कून् पाठयन् पाठनव्रतं रक्षितवतः तस्य तरुणस्य नाम 'शङ्कुकः' इत्येव ख्यातम् अभवत् । साहित्यशास्त्रक्षेत्रे तदीयं नाम प्रसिद्धम् अस्ति ।

A young man returned to his village after completing his studies. He began teaching, and his classes grew popular. Jealous teachers spread false rumors to keep students away. Unshaken, he taught wooden poles as if they were pupils. Soon, the villagers realized his dedication and the deceit of others. They asked him to teach their children, and his name Shankuka (“the one who taught stakes”) became famous in the world of literature.
