महाविद्यालयस्य कश्चन अध्यापकः देवदत्तः ईश्वरदर्शनं कर्तुं वाञ्च्छन् कस्यचन साधोः समीपं गच्छति । साधुः देवदत्तस्य सहनाशक्तेः परीक्षां करोति । यतः सहनां विना किमपि सिद्ध्यति न लोके । अन्ते महात्मना 'भगवान् बहिः कुत्रापि नास्ति । स तु निर्धनानां रुग्णानां पीडितानां च हृदये निवसति.....’ इत्यादि वचनैः देवदत्तः बोधितः । तस्मात् क्षणात् देवदत्ते विवेकः समुद्भूतः। सर्वां सम्पत्तिं निर्धनेषु वितीर्य रुग्णानां चिकित्सायां संलग्नः अभवत्। । तेषु सः ईश्वरस्य दर्शनं कृतवान् ।

A college teacher named Devadatta wished to see God and went to a saint. The saint tested his patience, saying that without endurance nothing can be achieved in life. Finally, the saint explained: “God is not outside anywhere. He dwells in the hearts of the poor, the sick, and the suffering”. At that moment, Devadatta gained true understanding. He gave away all his wealth to the needy and devoted himself to serving the sick. In them, he experienced the vision of God.

कस्यचन धनिकस्य गृहे विवाहप्रसङ्गे कश्चन लघुः बालकः रोदिति स्म । रोदनं कुर्वतः बालस्कय कर्मकरी माता पात्राणि प्रक्षालन्ती आसीत् । केचन आगत्य तस्य समाधानं कर्तुं प्रायतन्त । किन्तु तस्य बालकस्य रोदनं न समाप्तम् । तदनन्तरं तस्य माता आगत्य पुत्रम् उन्नीय तस्य केशेषु हस्तं प्रसार्य 'हुलुलुलु' इति उक्तवती येन सः शीघ्रमेव प्रसन्नः जातः । तदा तत्र स्तिथः कश्चन यदा 'हुलुलुलु' इत्यस्य अर्थम् अपृच्छत् तदा तया उक्तम् ''हुलुलुलु' इत्यस्य अर्थं ज्ञातुम् इष्यते चेत् भवान् मम पुत्रो भूत्वा आगच्छेत् । मातुः शब्दप्रसादेन एव शिशोः प्रसन्नता भवति' इति ।

During a wedding in a wealthy man’s house, a small child began to cry. His mother, a servant busy washing dishes, could not attend to him at once. Others tried to comfort the child, but his crying did not stop. Later, the mother came, lifted her son, gently ran her hand through his hair, and said “hulululu.” Immediately, the child became cheerful. Someone present asked her the meaning of “hulululu”. She replied: “If you wish to know its meaning, you must become my son. A mother’s soothing words alone bring joy to her child”.

कदाचित् राजसभायां मरणदण्डं प्राप्तवता बन्धिना राजा अवाच्यशब्दैः निन्दितः । तस्य वचनानि अनवगच्छन् राजा पार्श्वस्थान् अपृच्छत् 'किं वदन्नस्ति सः?’ इति । कश्चन चतुरः मन्त्री अवदत् 'स्वस्य आक्रोशम् असमाधनञ्च निगृह्य अन्येषां दोषं यः‌ क्षामयति स एव श्रेष्ठः' इति । राज्ञि करुणा उत्पन्ना । मरणदण्डनम् अपाकृतवान् च । अपरः मन्त्री अवदत् 'राज्ञः सन्निधौ असत्यं न वक्तव्यम् । सः बन्धी अवाच्यैः शब्दैः अनिन्दत्' इति । तदा राजा अवदत् 'भवता उक्तस्य सत्यस्य अपेक्षया तेन उक्तम् असत्यमेव श्रेष्ठम् । यतः तेन उक्तम् असत्यं मानवहितोद्देशेन' इति ।

Once, in a royal court, a prisoner condemned to death insulted the king with abusive words. The king could not understand them and asked his ministers what the prisoner had said. One wise minister replied: “He who restrains his own anger and forgives the faults of others is truly great.” Hearing this, compassion arose in the king’s heart, and he canceled the death sentence. Another minister then said: “One must not speak falsehood before the king. The prisoner indeed used abusive words”. The king responded: “The false words spoken by my minister are better than the truth, for they were spoken with the intention of human welfare”.
