गुरोः विरजानन्दस्य उटजस्य स्वच्छता दयानन्दस्य दायित्वम् आसीत् । एकदा यदा दयानन्दः उटजं सम्मार्जयन् अवकरान् द्वारसमीपे राशीकृतवान् आसीत् तदा कश्चित् तम् आहूतवान् इति कारणतः अवकरान् अक्षिप्त्वा एव ततः निर्गतवान् । तावता तत्र आगतवतः क्षीणदृष्टिशक्तेः विरजानन्दस्य अवकरस्पर्शतः महान् कोपः जातः । सः दयानन्दम् आनाय्य दण्डेन निरन्तरं ताडितवान् । यदा दयानन्दः उच्चैः रोदनं कृतवान् तदा त्यक्तकोपः सन् गुरुः 'वत्स! महती वेदना जाता किम्?’ इति पृष्टे दयानन्दः अवदत् 'गुरो ! दण्डप्रहारजनितवेदनाकारणतः अहं न रोदिमि । प्रहारसमये कुसुमकोमलः भवतः हस्तः कियतीं वेदनाम् अनुभूतवान् स्यात् इति स्मरतः‌ मम नेत्राभ्याम् अश्रूणि निर्गतानि' इति ।

The cleaning of Guru Virjananda’s hut was the responsibility of Dayananda. One day, while Dayananda was sweeping, he gathered the refuse near the doorway. Just then, someone called him, so he left without throwing it away. Soon after, Guru Virjananda, whose eyesight was weak, came and accidentally touched the refuse. Greatly angered, he called Dayananda and beat him repeatedly with a stick. When Dayananda cried aloud, the Guru, calming down, asked: “My child, did you suffer great pain?” Dayananda replied: “O Guru! I did not cry because of the pain from your blows. I wept because I thought of how much pain your tender, flower-like hand must have felt while striking me”.

कदाचित् कश्चन दरिद्रः अब्राहंलिङ्कन्-महोदयस्य समीपम् आगत्य 'किमपि ददातु' इति अपृच्छत् । तदा लिङ्कनवर्यः 'भवतः हस्तद्वयं मह्यं ददातु । अहं लक्षडालर्-परिमितं धनं दास्यामि' इति उक्तवान् । 'मम अमूल्यहस्तौ भवते दत्त्वा अहं किं करिष्यामि?’ इति अवदत् दरिद्रः । ततः पादद्वयं, नेत्रद्वयं ददातु इति यदा लिङ्कनवर्यः अवदत् तदा कोपेन दरिद्रः 'अहं अत्यमूल्यानि अङ्गानि कदापि न ददामि' इति अवदत् । अन्ते लिङ्कवर्यः वदति 'भवान् कश्चन सुदृढकायः आरोग्यवान् जनः । तस्य सदुपयोगं करोतु' इति । एतत् श्रुत्वा दरिद्रः अवदत् 'भवता अङ्गानाम् अमूल्यता दर्शिता । अहं परिश्रमेण कार्यं कृत्वा सार्थकं जीवनं करोमि' इति ।

Once, a poor man came to Abraham Lincoln and asked him for something. Lincoln said: “Give me your two hands, and I will give you one hundred thousand dollars”. The poor man replied: “If I give you my priceless hands, what will I do then?” Lincoln then said: “Give me your feet, give me your eyes.” The poor man, now angry, answered: “I will never give away my invaluable limbs”. Finally, Lincoln said: “You are a strong and healthy person. Make good use of that”. Hearing this, the poor man said: “You have shown me the priceless value of my body. I will work hard and make my life meaningful”.

आसीत् पुरा रणजितसिंहनामकः कश्चन प्रजानुरक्तः राजा यः न्यायेन धर्मेण च राज्यं परिपालयति स्म । कदाचित् वनविहारार्थं गच्छतः राज्ञः ललाटे कुतश्चित् कश्चन शिलाखण्डः पतितः । तस्य कारणान्वेषणे कृते ज्ञातं यत् काचित् वृद्धा बुभुक्षिताय पुत्राय वृक्षे विद्यमानं बहुबीजफलं प्राप्तुम् एकं शिलाखण्डम् अक्षिपत् । दौर्भाग्यवशात् सः शिलाखण्डः राज्ञः ललाटे पतितः । जडः वृक्षः अपि पाषाणघातं प्राप्य फलं ददाति, सचेतनः अहं कथं वा एतां दण्डयेयम् ? इति विचिन्त्य राजा तस्यै वृद्धायै आहारसामग्रीं, सहस्रं सुवर्णनाणकानि च दत्तवान् ।

Long ago, there was a king named Ranjit Singh, beloved by his people, who ruled with justice and righteousness. One day, while going for a walk in the forest, a stone suddenly fell on his forehead. On investigating the cause, it was discovered that an old woman, in order to feed her hungry son, had thrown a stone at a tree to obtain its fruit. By misfortune, the stone struck the king’s forehead. The king reflected: “Even an insentient tree gives fruit only after being struck by a stone. How then can I, a conscious being, punish this poor woman?” With this thought, the king gave her food supplies and a thousand gold coins.
