कदाचित् भगवान् बुद्धः सरोवरे सद्योविकसितस्य कमलस्य सुगन्धस्य आस्वादनम् आरब्धवान् । तावता काचित् देवकन्या प्रत्यक्षा भूत्वा अवदत् 'किमपि मूल्यम् अदत्त्वा पुष्पस्य गन्धम् आजिघ्रति भवान् । एतत् चौर्यम्' इति । तावता अन्यः कश्चन आगत्य बहूनां कमलपुष्पाणां निर्दाक्षिण्यम् उत्पाटनम् आरब्धवान् । किन्तु सा देवकन्या तम् उद्दिश्य किमपि न अवदत् । तथा किमर्थम् इति बुद्धेन पृष्टे देवकन्या अवदत् 'लोभतृष्णादिभिः अभिभूताः सांसारिकाः धर्माधर्मयोः भेदं न जानन्ति । अतः धर्मरक्षणस्य भारः अपि तेषु आधिक्येन न भवति । किन्तु ये धर्मपरायणाः स्युः, तेषाम् अल्पा एव मार्गभ्रष्टता भवति महते पापाय । महताम् उत्तरदायित्वम् अपि भवति महत् एव' इति ।

Once, the Buddha enjoyed the fragrance of a freshly blossomed lotus in a lake. A celestial maiden appeared and said: ‘You smell the flower’s fragrance without paying anything — this is theft’. Meanwhile, another man came and ruthlessly plucked many lotuses. Yet the maiden said nothing to him. Curious, the Buddha asked why. She replied: ‘Worldly people, overcome by greed and desire, cannot distinguish between right and wrong; hence the burden of protecting dharma does not fall heavily upon them. But those devoted to righteousness — even a small deviation can lead to great sin. For the virtuous, responsibility is as great as their stature’.

कदाचित् बहुपुत्रवान् कश्चन वलयविक्रयिकः पुत्रेण सह वाणिज्याय प्रस्थितः पार्श्वस्थं ग्रामं प्रति । तस्मिन् एव ग्रामे राजमाता अत्तिमब्बा अपि वसति स्म । पार्श्वग्रामे स्थितं प्रासादम् उपसर्प्य मातॄः आहूतवान् वलयक्रयणार्थम् । तावता लघुवयस्कः तस्य पुत्रः बालवचनैः 'आगच्छन्तु मातरः, अयं रक्तवर्णीयः भवत्यै युज्यते । नीलवर्णीयः तस्यै युज्यते .....' इति वदन् एकैकाम् अपि पश्यन् वाक्चातुर्येण सर्वासां मनः आकृष्टवान् । तं बुद्धिमन्तं वाक्चतुरं बालं दृष्ट्वा तस्य शिक्षणव्यवस्थायाः उत्तरदायित्वं राजमाता स्वीकरोति । गच्छता कालेन श्रद्धया पठन् सः 'महाकविः रन्नः' इति कन्नडसाहित्यलोके ख्यातिं गतः ।

A bangle-seller once went with his young son to a nearby village where Queen Mother Attimabbe lived. At the palace, he invited the women to buy bangles. The boy, with charming words, suggested which colors suited each lady, captivating everyone with his wit and eloquence. Seeing his intelligence, Attimabbe took responsibility for his education. With dedication, the boy studied and in time became celebrated in Kannada literature as the great poet Ranna.

कश्चन धान्यवणिक् किञ्चन गुरुकुलं गतवान् । गुरुकुलं धनयुक्तं तु न । व्यवस्था अपि सामान्या । अतः सः वणिक् अवदत् 'नूतनानि परिवर्तनानि, व्यवस्थायां परिवर्तनानि अपेक्ष्यन्ते अत्र । तदा गुरुकुलस्य ख्यातिः वर्धते' इति । किन्तु गुरुकुलस्य आचार्यः प्रत्यवदत् 'ख्यातिप्राप्त्युद्देशः न अस्माकम् । सर्वविधाः छात्राः प्राप्यन्ते अत्र । सर्वान् सम्यक् अध्याप्य उत्तमविद्यावतः कर्तुं प्रयासं कुर्मः वयम् । वयं स्म शिक्षकाः, न तु वणिजः......’ इति । तद् वचनम् अङ्गीकुर्वन् वणिक् आचार्यं नमस्कृत्य प्रभूतं धनं गुरुकुलाय दत्त्वा ततः गतवान् ।

A grain merchant once visited a gurukula. The institution was poor and its arrangements simple. The merchant suggested: ‘Introduce new changes and improvements; then the gurukula’s fame will grow’. But the teacher replied: ‘Our aim is not fame. Students of all kinds come here, and we strive to educate them well and make them truly learned. We are teachers, not merchants’. Accepting these words, the merchant bowed to the teacher, donated a large sum of money to the gurukula, and departed.
