  • Peeking into Picture Books!
    2021/03/30

Nancy has a passion for picture books, Lauren's only just starting to realize why! We talk about Picture books as being windows, mirror, and sliding glass doors. If this is a new analogy to you, you can read more here: https://www.mackincommunity.com/2018/11/14/building-a-diverse-book-collection-providing-windows-mirrors-sliding-glass-doors-and-beyond/ We discuss what that means locally, through the work of authors like Kekla Magoon, Cynthia Leitich Smith, and Jason Chin, via the Vermont College of Fine Arts and the Children's Literacy Foundation. You can also follow #OwnVoices and #WeNeedDiverseBooks online for further discussion. When it comes to picture books, there's more than meets the eye!

We also talk about the new developments at the Stowe Free Library, appointments for in house computer and browsing starting April 5th, and the fact that the Podcast is going to go on hiatus.

Recommendations this month include: How Do you Dance? by Thyra Heder, Woodpecker Girl by Chingyen Liu and I-Tsun Chiang, Your House, My House by Marianne Dubuc, The three mothers : how the mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin shaped a nation by Anna Malaika Tubbs, Fighting Words by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, (VGDBA nominee), Stamped: Racism, antiracism, and you by Ibram X. Kendi and Jason Reynolds, The All Soul’s Trilogy by Deborah Harkness (with mention of The Discovery of Witches streaming series), Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy (with mention of it's streaming movie adaptation), The fossil hunter : dinosaurs, evolution, and the woman whose discoveries changed the world by Shelley Emling & Ammonite (DVD)
