#18: 5 Ways to Stop Overthinking

  • If you were to notice yourself only overthinking about how great your life is, you probably wouldn't want to stop over thinking. It would be amazing. So we can guess that it’s constant negative thoughts popping into your brain that you don’t want.

    So why do we overthink so much? And why is it negative? The first thing is that we are overstimulated. We need our phones by us 24/7 and have forgotten what it’s like to hear our thoughts. The second is that we love control. Although there is little in this life we control, we think that if we overthink and ‘prepare’ ourselves for the worst, it will make it better if it does happen. Truth is, we’re just letting ourselves suffer. 

    Also, studies show we are hardwired to think of the worst outcome. Go back to caveman days, we had to constantly think with survival in mind, we could get eaten by a sabertooth tiger! We haven’t developed that much since then, so it’s no wonder we still overthink.
