It was built by the Reverend John A. Sprunger and his wife in 1903 after their orphanage located in Bern, Indiana was destroyed by fire in 1899. Three orphan girls were reported to have died in that fire. The name Gore Orphanage was adopted by young thrill seekers over the years because it apparently fired their collective imaginations of murder and mayhem at Sprunger's home for orphans. The belief is/was that the word "gore" was referring to that of a bloody wound. Thus it amplified, and seemed to substantiate, the ever evolving horror story about the place.
