    The families domestic servant, Hilda Blake, witnessed the cold blooded murder. She claimed an angry drifter shot Mary because she wouldn't give him food. The city of Brandon demands vengeance. They want the tramp who killed Mary Lane brought to justice, so they form vigilante groups that patrol the city, roughing up immigrants and anyone else who doesn't belong.
