  • Treasure Hunters Rick And Marty Lagina From The Curse Of Oak Island On The History Channel
    2024/11/13
On the south shore of Nova Scotia lies a tree-covered island that has intrigued treasure hunters for nearly 230 years as it is believed to be hiding undiscovered treasure. The HISTORY Channel’s hit series The Curse of Oak Island, premiering its twelfth season on November 12 at 9/8c, follows Michigan-born brothers Rick and Marty Lagina who use modern technology and American know-how in an effort to solve one of the greatest mysteries of all time. Although the search has been expensive and dangerous, the Laginas hope to avoid the curse long enough to find the treasure before they run out of money... or worse.

In the new season, Rick and Marty are back, alongside their talented team, and closer than ever to solving the mystery of Oak Island. The team pinpoints evidence of a large source of precious metals deep within the Money Pit area, and executes a core-drilling operation to zero in on the legendary valuables already discovered during large-scale excavations. Additionally, new discoveries will shed light on the treasure mystery and new secrets will be revealed, corroborating the team’s suspicion that Oak Island has been visited numerous times by medieval European cultures and may contain multiple treasures.

Rick Lagina is a retired U.S. postal worker from Northern Michigan who has dreamed of solving the Oak Island mystery since he first read about it in the January 1965 issue of Reader’s Digest at the age of 11. His faith that someone went to great efforts to hide something of incredible value centuries ago on Oak Island has only been strengthened by the many incredible clues he, his brother, Marty and their team have discovered since they took over the treasure hunt in 2006. Marty Lagina is Rick’s younger brother and has shared the dream of solving the Oak Island mystery with him since their adventurous childhood in Northern Michigan. However, as an engineer who owns his own energy business, he’s the self-proclaimed "skeptic" of the two, who continues to ground the operation in facts and hard science.

  • AJ Foyt Survivor Champion Legend From Racing Historian Art Garner
    2024/11/12
A.J. Foyt: Survivor, Champion, Legend (Volume One, Octane Press, October 2024), an extensive and highly entertaining biography of one of America's most popular, colorful, and controversial sports heroes, is now available for order. Art Garner-an award-winning author and finalist for the prestigious PEN/ESPN award for literary sports writing for his bestselling book, Black Noon-has captured the action on and off the track that led many to consider Foyt to be one of the greatest race car drivers of all time-and one reporter to write that A.J. stood for "another jerk."Known for his fiery disposition and bare-knuckled approach, Foyt's driving career spanned five decades-six if you count an exhibition race when he was five years old. He was the first driver to win the Indianapolis 500 four times and still holds Indy car records for most victories and championships. He is the only driver ever to win the Indianapolis 500, 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Daytona 500, one version of auto racing's triple crown. He also won the International Race of Champions in 1976 and 1977 and still holds the world closed-course speed record that he set in 1987. "Statistics tell only part of the story," Garner says. "Foyt likes to say, 'I'm just A.J., ain't no different than any other man,' but nothing could be further from the truth. He's one of the most complex and intricate personalities in the history of auto racing, perhaps all of sports." The biography also explores the unique relationship between Foyt and his "Daddy," Anthony Joseph "Tony" Foyt Sr. Although they often clashed-it was Tony who said working with his son could be like "dancing with a buzzsaw"-A.J. called him "the only man I can trust." It was Tony who instilled in his son an overwhelming drive to be the best, teaching him that victory was expected, excellence assumed. And it was Tony who told a crowd celebrating A.J.'s fourth Indy 500 victory that his son had "done fair."Through tireless research and hundreds of hours of new interviews with Foyt, his family, friends, and the biggest names in motorsports-including Mario Andretti, Roger Penske, Al Unser Sr., Johnny Rutherford, Jackie Stewart, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, and many others-Garner has compiled an unprecedented look at Foyt's life and career. At 656 pages it includes ninety-five photos, some from Foyt's family albums, and fifty-five pages of source notes and index.

  • Grateful Dead Historian Dennis McNally Talking About The Book The Silver Snarling Trumpet
    2024/11/11
For decades, passionate fans of the Grateful Dead have speculated about the contents of a "lost manuscript"-a sort of holy grail to the origin story of a band that is practically a religion for many.Indeed, THE SILVER SNARLING TRUMPET: The Birth of the Grateful Dead-The Lost Manuscript of Robert Hunter, has been pulled from the attic after more than 50 years. It will be published with a foreword by John Mayer (Dead & Co), an introduction by Dennis McNally (renowned historian of the Dead) and an afterword by Brigid Meier (a close confidant of Jerry Garcia's and core member of the early scene described in the book).
As McNally writes in the foreword: "The subculture that became known as the Grateful Dead began as a cluster of relationships long before there as a band; Trumpet is the story of that earliest community."
Essential reading for Dead Heads and anyone with an interest in early 60s counterculture, THE SILVER SNARLING TRUMPET is as Mayer puts it in the foreword, "a lost box of film that, when developed, reveals some of the most striking images you've ever seen, the kind that make you go slack jawed and your heart race." In these pages, readers are privy to the early days of Hunter, Jerry Garcia, and their cohorts, who sit at the coffee shop passing around a single cup of bottomless coffee because they lacked the funds for more than one. "We created our own culture simply by being friends and allowing that circle of friendship to expand organically," writes Hunter's friend Brigid Meier in a heartfelt Afterword. "If you thought you were one of us, you were welcome to join in."
With the publication of this long awaited manuscript, we get to follow Hunter, Jerry Garcia, and the rest of the band into the stacks at Kepler's Books, to rent instruments at Swain's House of Music, and through the countryside on road trips. We witness impromptu jams, inspired intellectual pranks, and a dialogue that is, by turns, amusing and brilliant and outrageous. Hunter shares his impressions of his first gig with Garcia for a college audience, along with descriptions of his most intense dreams and psychedelic explorations. All of it is enlivened by Hunter's visionary spirit and profound ideas about creativity and collaboration.
This is an exciting season for fans of the Dead: Robert Hunter's career-spanning archival series recently launched through Rhino; Dead & Co. just finished an engagement at The Sphere, and the band will be honored at the Kennedy Center Honors in December.
