It’s the early nineties and the elite he is now surrounded by is struggling for relevance. Alienated from the mainstream, and running low on inherited wealth, his peers have retreated into snobbery and fatalism. In this world, half remembered traditions mix with decadence and an awful lot of small dead animals. And sometimes, not just animals.

HIV/AIDs Research Pioneer Dr. Mardge Cohen Receives the 2024 Gertrude Herzfeld Prize for Health

Presented by the Edinburgh Jewish Cultural Centre and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh

On 3 March 2024 at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Dr. Mardge Cohen, a prominent figure in HIV advocacy and women's health for over 45 years who serves as the Medical Director of Women Equity in AIDS Care and Treatment Rwanda (WE-ACT×) and practises at Boston Health Care for the Homeless, received the Third Biennial Herzfeld Prize.

The award was presented by the official representative of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Kirsty Mozolowski; the Head of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, Professor David Argyle; Chair of EJCC, Janet Mundy; the Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, the Right Honourable Robert Aldridge, and his Consort, Dr. Colin Cunningham; and Chair of the Herzfeld Prize 2024, Hannah Handelman.

The Edinburgh Jewish Cultural Centre and The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh proudly honour the memory and achievements of the pioneering surgeon who was the second female fellow and the first female practising fellow of the College, Dr. Gertrude Herzfeld (1890-1981). Dr. Herzfeld was one of the first female surgeons to work in Scotland and was a pioneering Jewish female paediatric surgeon in Edinburgh.

Rodge Glass is the award-winning author of eight books across fiction and nonfiction. His biography of Alasdair Gray, whose novel Poor Things has recently been adapted into a major new film, won a Somerset Maugham Award for nonfiction. Now Rodge is about to publish his own autobiographical memoir, Joshua in the Sky, a chapter of which won the 2023 Anne Brown Essay Prize. Set across England and Scotland, the book tells the story of one man’s attempt to come to make sense of the death of his nephew from a rare blood condition both share.

Sara Sheridan is a writer and activist who is interested particularly in female history. She has written more than 20 books. Truth or Dare, her first novel, received a Scottish Library Award and was shortlisted for the Saltire. In 2019 Sara remapped Scotland according to women’s history for Historic Environment Scotland – the resulting book Where are the Women was listed as one of the David Hume Institute’s Books of the Year 2019. In it, she imagined several monuments to the witches. In 2022 her novel The Fair Botanists was chosen as Waterstones’ Scottish Book of the Year.

Eleanor Thom is the author of Connective Tissue. Set in South-West Scotland, 2010, air-traffic controller Helena's baby is born with unexplained paralysis. Faced with an unforgiving medical establishment, she turns to the Jewish grandmother she never knew, unfolding the past in search of answers. Eleanor's first novel won the Saltire First Book of the year in 2009, and she works as the Communities Writer in Residence for the Edinburgh International Book Festival.
