I had an early interest in software. I became interested at the age of 13. Also I started programming at the age of 13.
I will not leave a massive fortune of money for my children. I will be leaving ten million dollars for each, and pay for their education and health issues. I don’t want my children to end up like all of the “poor little rich kids” whose lives are ended by drugs and alcohol or in the pursuit of lavish spending.
Most of my hobbies are old-fashion. I am not a gamer, and my son could tell you a lot more about gaming. But, something I like to do are play bridge and watch my daughter ride horses.
One decision I regret making is working all night long with Kent. Kent was my best friend at the time. One day at a class on mountaineering, Kent was worn down from the endless hours of working. Tragically he crashed into rocks and died.
Out of all of my accomplishments, I can’t choose which one I am most proud of. But one of my greatest achievements was when my wife and I started the Gates Foundation. The purpose of the foundation was to globally, reduce poverty and and enhance healthcare. Also, to broaden educational opportunities and access to technology.
One person who helped me to create Microsoft was Paul Allen. Paul was one of my friends. He was also by my side as I worked through the night trying to create various softwares and scripts.
Out of all of the companies that I have ran against. I would have to say Apple would be the company that I have had the most rivalry with. Steve Jobs and I are very similar but also have our differences.
I think the world today would be different without the creation of Microsoft. One difference would be that we would not have all of the technology we have today. Also, the Gates Foundation would not have been founded.
One Quote I live by is, “If you can’t make it good, at least make it look good.”
One thing that motivated me to work hard was my family. I had to live up to our name, and be successful and make a difference like my father and grandfathers.
