Varg Vikernes, known for his solo act Burzum and the murder of Mayhem-founder and all-around-asshole Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth, was sentenced to prison last episode on May 16, 1994. After the mediocre release of "Warning" (2000), Green Day needed a top-notch followup. The Anaheim punk trio set to work on their seventh studio album: "Cigarettes and Valentines," a deviation from the acoustic/folk-punk sound that fans rejected in "Warning." Before its 2003 release, band members claim the album's master-tapes were stolen, never to be recovered. In lieu of doing it all over again, the band would write and release "American Idiot" (2004), a smash-hit that rocketed them to more fame than they knew how to waste.
