On this episode, we are talking about the alphabet game, the most classic of in-car games that people love or hate depending on the rules and what letter you get stuck with. We'll give you the lowdown on the standard alphabet game with official Tic Tac Road Rules so you can start playing the right way, right now. But in addition to that, we have an original remastered version of the game, which is a lot of fun to play.

The Alphabet Game: A Brief History
The invention of the alphabet game is hard to attribute to a single source. It's believed the game was created organically by bored drivers over many years and popularized by word of mouth and the obvious nature of its design. While there are no historical records of the game's origin, we'll try to estimate when it might have been first played.

Official Alphabet Game Rules

1. Three Formats: Round Robin, Time Attack, and Cooperative.
2. Players must announce letter finds in the format: Letter. Word. Location or Letter. Plate. Car Description.
3. No using letters inside or affixed to the game vehicle.
4. Only one letter can be found per sign or license plate.
5. Different signs on the same pole, marquee, or building are considered separate signs.
6. Spoiling (announcing a letter out of turn) results in elimination from the current game.
7. Finding the wrong letter on your turn leads to elimination; the letter is passed to the next player.
8. Letters are never passed over or skipped.
9. Z is the wildcard letter. It can be located and announced after the letter Y.
10. The goal is to find all alphabet letters, avoid elimination, and call out a "Z" letter find first.

Introducing Alphabet Road (or Alphabet Horse)
A 2-player in-car game where Player 1 picks a word they can find sequential letters for, using standard alphabet game rules, in a stated amount of time or miles. If successful, Player 2 must do the same. If Player 2 fails, they get a letter in "Road." Players take turns naming and finding letters until one receives all the letters in "Road" and is eliminated. Themes and time/mile limits can add excitement.
