In the summer of 1932, the body of Mamie Thurman was found brutally murdered on Trace Mountain in Logan County, West Virginia. Her throat had been slit, her head beaten, and her body unceremoniously dumped off the hillside, her wedding ring still on her finger.

Mamie wasn’t just any woman in the coalfields. A 31-year-old churchgoer, socialite, and wife of a respected patrolman, she was known for her charm, her beauty, and her ability to float between the strict expectations of Logan society and the nightlife scene that simmered just beneath its surface. But as rumors of affairs, corruption, and bootlegging started swirling, her murder exposed more than just a killer, it exposed the moral double life of an entire town.

So who killed Mamie Thurman? And why?

In this episode, we explore the tangled web of suspects: from the handyman who went to prison for her murder, to a prominent judge, to whispers of a powerful cover-up that still echo in Logan County to this day. David Fann wasn’t just a businessman—he was the heartbeat of Amigo, West Virginia. His family describes him as self-made, hardworking, and the kind of man who noticed everyone around him. From the Redbird Drive-In to a string of small ventures, he embodied Appalachian grit and generosity. But on June 22, 2016, everything changed. David was found dead near Lake Stevens in Raleigh County, his truck abandoned, his wallet missing. It wasn’t an accident—and it wasn’t suicide. It was homicide.

Nearly a decade later, his family still fights for answers. They’ve kept his memory alive through stories, community, and the relentless pursuit of justice. This week, I’m diving into one of the most bizarre, beautiful, and ultimately broken places in West Virginia: The Palace of Gold.

Perched above the hills near Moundsville, what began as a spiritual sanctuary for Hare Krishna devotees became a national headline factory in the 1980s—complete with FBI raids, murder plots, fraud, racketeering, and one of the most surreal downfalls in religious history.

I’ll walk you through:
-How a WV hilltop became a marble-and-gold mecca built by hand
-The rise of Swami Bhaktipada (Keith Ham) and the New Vrindaban community
-The power, control, and devotion that blinded many followers
-The violence, manipulation, and financial corruption that eventually tore it apart
