  • Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm talk Spectrum
    2024/09/20
I don't often dip back much and reminisce about my time in the music business. I'm a don't look back type of guy, but I couldn't resist on today's show sharing an anecdote or three because this project is all about music. I've got two new guests on the show with me, Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm, who are promoting their new project Spectrum from Mad Cave Studios. There's going to be nothing like this on the shelves, it has the feel of an experimental piece of music and we spend a fair bit of time talking about Dave's approach artistically to this rather unorthodox story and I get to hear all about one of the most unique antagonists I've seen in quite some time, Echo, one of the Sustained who are a group of elemental beings who can alter reality through music, and she looks like Brigitte Nielsen got hooked up with Prince's clothing designer with a Cruella Deville fetish. It's memorable as is everything else about the project. I'm a big fan of Dave's work (Enter The Blue, Chasin’ The Bird: Charlie Parker in California, and Miles Davis and the Search for Sound) and wholeheartedly believe this is his best yet. Make sure to check it out. From the publisher Melody Parker is losing her mind. She’s living on the streets of Seattle during the WTO protests of 1999. She is seeing things. Androids. Aliens. Pigs in high fashion. And a creature named Echo—one of the Sustained: elemental beings with the power to alter reality through music. She invites Melody to join her as she brings about the end of the world. As Melody tries to escape this strange woman, suppressed memories from across vast spans of time flood into her awareness, bringing her very identity into question. • Allen Wu talks Shentu
    2024/09/17
I learn so much from every comic creator that comes on the Cryptid Creator Corner, whether they've been making comics for decades or they've just made one of their first comics, like today's guest: Allen Wu. Allen comes on the Cryptid Creator Corner to chat about SHENTU, which you can get here: https://thcomics.myshopify.com/ SHENTU is about an immortal rabbit girl who journeys through Ancient China healing those she meets and desperately trying to recreate the elixir of life. Allen talks about how he originally contemplated this as an animated series, but pivoted to create a comic along with artist Davi Hallyson and letterer Tom Lynott. Allen talks about the different scripting processes he went through and how he became hooked on comics once Davi's artwork started to hit his inbox. Allen plans on taking a SHENTU anthology to Kickstarter in a few months. You can sign up to be notified about SHENTU: Memories of Spring here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/allenyorkwu/shentu-memories-of-spring Check out all of Allen's projects on his website: https://allenyorkwu.com/ Our episode sponsors unSeen/unHeard: Disability and Neurodivergence Comic Anthology on Kickstarter Don't miss this 64-page, 12 story anthology where at least 50% of each creative team is comprised of people who are neurodivergent or have a disability. • James Asmus and Jim Festante talk Survival Street: The Radical Left
    2024/09/13
When the first volume of Survival Street came out, I hadn't seen anything like it on shelves and it ended up immediately being one of my picks for the first annual Comic Book Yeti ICE or Indy Comics Excellence Awards in 2022. Who wouldn't love a satirical take on the current sad dominance of corporate culture in America and what a complete take over might look like in a not too distant dystopian future. Couple that with former children's show puppets being the aggressive catalyst to take on our corporate overloads, I was in love. Way back then writer James Asmus came on the show to talk about the project and how it was a mechanism to help overcome the anxiety from the pressures of modern society that we all feel. Now he's back with co-writer Jim Festante for another round promoting the second volume of Survival Street: The Radical Left from Dark Horse Comics. It gave me a rare opportunity to ask not about comic influences but comedic influences for the writing duo, how their partnership works, and even compare a few hopeful notes about where we're all headed. Make sure to visit their website to see what else they've been working on. From the publisher The political satire action-adventure hit series returns! After America is sold off to private companies, this A-B-C-Team of ex-entertainers rescues kids from cruel company towns. But Portland can’t hold everyone, and the cracks are about to break... Prepare for a radical departure in the series Library Journal called a “blisteringly satirical mash-up of Sesame Street and Robocop.” A candy coating of pop culture madness, humor, cartoonishly absurd hyper-violence, and just enough hope to keep holding on.
