Disney almost had a Legend of Sleepy Hollow ride, in not one, but TWO different parks.

In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we unearth some rare concepts for an Ichabod Crane-themed attraction by Imagineering—ideas that, much to our chagrin, never saw the light of day. We begin with a brief tour through the history of the Sleepy Hollow portion of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, highlighting some incredible concept art by Mary Blair. From there, we head over to Walt Disney World to investigate what happened to Ichabod in both Fantasyland and Liberty Square. Along the way, we explore architectural influences rooted in literary history, uncover the origins of a classic Haunted Mansion song, and learn the backstory behind a popular invisible dog joke. Kate also shares details about a little-known, never-realized land once proposed for Disneyland. Meanwhile, Kirk terrifies us with a bizarre attraction from Hong Kong and reveals some shadowy concepts that reflect his deepest wishes for Liberty Square. We end the episode watching the Headless Horseman ride into the sunset—along with our hopes for what could have been (and may never be) when it comes to seeing this eerie attraction brought to life in the Disney parks.

What would it have looked like if Mr. Toad made a comeback in the Magic Kingdom?

In this episode of Distory, we head back to Mr. Toad's in Walt Disney World for one last ride before they demolished this beloved attraction. After finishing our detailed journey through Track B (learning about Disney's oldest criminal along the way), we have a virtual Toad-In as we protest the closure of this iconic ride. After we've accepted Toad's fate, we highlight a few places you can still visit J. Thaddeus in the park and debunk a wildly accepted Disney rumor. We wrap up this series with some incredible, rare Disney concept art featuring a modern version of Mr. Toad in the Magic Kingdom that sadly never came to pass, and we toast our hero, Mr. Toad, who will always be remembered, even if he wasn't quite as profitable as Winnie the Pooh.

What are several glaring anachronisms in Walt Disney World’s Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride?

On this episode of Distory, we motor on through the first half of Track B in the extinct Walt Disney World version of Mr. Toad, looking for the details and history that have been lost over time. Why did Rolly Crump add a Gypsy Camp to Mr. Toad's Wild Ride?

In this episode of Distory, we continue motoring through track A of Walt Disney World’s extinct Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride attraction. As we crash through the kitchen window, we head out into the woods to explore some Rolly Crump posters foreshadowing the camp around the corner. After Kirk does some palm reading and tells Kate’s fortune, we do a deep dive into Romani culture and history in order to understand what this unique scene is all about, and why Rolly Crump chose to put it in this attraction. Kirk gets excited about some wagons, Kate teaches us about what instruments should (and should not) be in this scene, and we find a few familiar characters before coming to a screeching halt just before we slam into a sideways caravan door into next scene.

Note: We know that “Gypsy” is a derogatory term for the Romani people, but it is historically accurate to this scene as that is how it is described on the 1971 blueprints and layout. So, for the sake of historical accuracy, we do use this terminology in this episode.

Did Disney World's Mr. Toad steal design elements from another popular Disney attraction?

On this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we head back to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom to motor our way through Track A of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. But we don't get very far on this madcap adventure, since there are so many details to see in Toad's abode. We start by exploring some of the 3D sculptures and the meaning behind the portraiture in the grand hall before crashing our way into the trophy room. As we wind our way around this unique scene, we find some petticoat duelists, a prop unique to Rolly Crump, and a few animals we've seen before. We wind down this episode in the kitchen, discussing the deeper meaning of the staging of the room and learning a little bit about animation history inspired by a tipsy maid before we screech to a halt and save more of Track A for next week.

Mr. Toad moved to Florida for the opening of Walt Disney World... but he was never meant to be there.

In this episode of Distory, we hop on over to the Magic Kingdom and explore the history behind why Mr. Toad became part of (yet another) Fantasyland. Along the way, we discuss Rolly Crump (the lead Imagineer of this version) and hear his take on the design of the Magic Kingdom and life in general so that we can more fully understand his work within this iconic attraction. After a thorough look around the exterior and queue, including comparing it to the Disneyland versions both past and present, we find some long-lost WED documents, analyze some changing motorcar designs, and debate the design choices of the character flats on either side of the two tracks. We finally come to a screeching halt just before entering Toad Hall to allow plenty of time in future episodes to dig into every detail we can find that made this classic ride so delightfully weird and wonderful.
