  • Episode 121: Building a proper LinkedIn network with Michelle Benson
    2024/11/05
I'm not chasing, I'm going to be found¨

As a confirmed Big Deal on Linked In, Michelle Benson joins us to talk us through the site's shift from job site to relationship building forum. We get into the opportunity to bypass the Comms Team, how everyone is a lurker and the sad death of the giant cheque. Michelle goes back to her humble first gig - working on a disruptive Nike campaign in Manhattan - and subsequent career built upon doing things differently. We pick up a shopping trolley, adapt to our environment and pick up some tips on breaking out of the echo chamber. Pour yourself a bubble bath, turn off your air con and build a proper network.

  • Episode 119: The art of communication with Ishbel Smith
    2024/10/11
"Stories are a blend of information and emotion"

It's breakfast on day two at the Scottish Fundraising Conference and we're joined by Ishbel Smith to talk through the power and importance of storytelling in everything we do.

Thanks to her experience as a commercial litigator turned third-sector consultant, we've got competitive debating on the world stage, distilling our connection to a cause, immersing yourself in knowledge and forest-eating rabbits. We talk about being curious, how to persuade, listening effectively and the three reasons we tell stories. There's just enough time to squeeze in the stories we tell ourselves, the comedians we are officially funnier than and (if you've got this far) our shortening attention spans. All delivered laden with Ishbel's passion shining through - impressive for such an early start.

This is part two of a three part series from the Scottish Fundraising Conference.

  • Episode 118: The price of everything, the value of nothing with Scottish Fundraising Conference plenary speaker Anna Fowlie
    2024/10/11
"We need to talk about what goes wrong so we can learn"

Anna Fowlie, the CEO of the SCVO took to the stage on Wednesday morning in Glasgow, kicking off day two of the Scottish Fundraising Conference. We caught up with her the night before to talk through her journey to the plenary stage.

We found a passion for mediaeval Islamic and European art and architecture, references to Oscar Wilde and tips for first-time conference attendees - but we also strayed off-topic into the pressure of representing thousands of organisations, taking up the big seat as chief executive, making policy decisions which affect lives and dreams for the government to do the same. We meet the posh kids from school, discuss our first gigs and make a call for investment in the sector before it's time to get dressed up for the awards.

This is part one of a three part series from the Scottish Fundraising Conference.

  • Episode 117: Mobilising Movements with Esther Foreman
    2024/08/27
"Think Big, Get Shit Done, Have Fun"

Esther Foreman has spent 20 years in the social-good space, time spent running award-winning campaigns, supporting enterprise and building teams. Her career went from Doctors without Borders, Shelter, Help the Aged and Mencap to the Social Change Agency, where she supports over 600 organisations to grow, innovate and support people through fiscal and process hosting.

We start with some excellent (though quite niche) holiday advice from James before we wonder whether our latest guest is related to Kenneth, and then we dive into a packed episode including a failed PhD, how leadership and cults go wrong and the magic in decentralised technology. There’s a life-changing meeting with Bob Geldof, a reminder of Kenneth’s cover-star status and the unique challenges for middle-children. Then there’s female founders, why you should choose a chauffeur over a babysitter and a cool origin story. We dive into our risk-appetite, getting the money to those making the impact and a call to arms for mutual aid.

    It’s a belter.

  • Episode 116: Are you an Artist, a Manager or an Entrepreneur with Rob Woods
    2024/07/23
Our guest on the podcast this week has worked in fundraising since the year 2000. If you can find a fundraising trainer more passionate and purpose-driven about the sector, we’re yet to find them.

His business, Brightspot Fundraising, has helped thousands of individuals to unlock their potential in fundraising. Offering a series of expertly constructed courses and programmes we’ve been huge fans of this guest and his role in the sectors for many years. So much so, that this will be his second appearance on the pod, originally joining us in Dec 2017 in what was our 20th episode.

We’re pleased to welcome back Rob Woods to the Do More good podcast.

  • Episode 115: Delving into the world of CSR/ESG with Kerry McNally
    2024/03/19
"You don't operate as a company in a bubble."

A high-brow start to the show this week with a mention on PMQs before we dive into CSR, ESG and DB. Then it's Downing Street to Guatemala, making good decisions and learning on the job.

We're joined by Kerry McNally, Group Head of Communities at Flutter Entertainment, to talk through what Corporate Social Responsibility or Environment Social and Governance means in the corporate world. Kerry explains how she didn't take a typical career path, mobilising 10,000 people and achieving the dream of exponential impact. We discuss investing in relationships, three-pint focus groups and cringing at puns (but using them anyway).

Kenneth ends by penning a litter-based love-letter to Ron before James get's back to Parent's Evening.
