​In October 2019, Wade Wilson, a 25-year-old from Fort Myers, Florida, committed the brutal murders of two women in Cape Coral. On October 6, Wilson met 35-year-old Kristine Melton at a local bar and accompanied her home. The following morning, he strangled Melton to death in her residence. Later that day, Wilson encountered 43-year-old Diane Ruiz as she walked to work. After luring her into a vehicle he had stolen from Melton, Wilson strangled Ruiz and, upon realizing she was still alive, ran her over multiple times, leading to her death. ​In June 2024, a jury convicted Wilson of two counts of first-degree premeditated murder, along with charges of grand theft, burglary, battery, and petit theft. The jury recommended the death penalty, which was upheld by Circuit Judge Nicholas Thompson in August 2024. Judge Thompson cited the heinous, atrocious, and cruel nature of the murders, as well as the cold, calculated premeditation of the second murder, as factors in his decision. ​Wilson's crimes have had a profound impact on the Cape Coral community and the families of the victims. Melton was remembered as a cat lover and a great friend, while Ruiz was a mother of two sons and described as the "heartbeat of the bar" where she worked.
