Episode 48: The Pros & Cons of Dry Needling

  • サマリー

  • Welcome to Pints & Pelvic Floors: The Podcast. In Episode 48 I will cover the pros and cons of dry needling as well as the training required in the state of Maryland to be endorsed by the Board of Physical Therapy to be able to provide dry needling to patients.

In this episode we will discuss:

    • Pros of Dry Needling
      • Pain relief & improved mobility
      • Potentially avoid surgery or medications
      • Able to reach deeper or hard to reach muscles
      • Can be performed in conjunction with other treatments
      • Can be performed in shorter treatment sessions
    • Cons of Dry Needling
      • It requires a needle 🙂
      • Soreness is expected for 24-72 hours afterwards
      • Bleeding and bruising may occur, but is rare
      • There are structures that limit that areas we can needle or the approach we take with needling
      • Dry Needling is NOT available in all 50 states
    • Contraindications - reasons we may not be able to needle include:
      • Fear of needles
      • Inability to communicate consent for care
      • Over areas of lymphedema
      • During pregnancy in first trimester
      • Immunocompromised individuals due to risk of infection
      • Over areas of implants including pecs, breast, deltoids, biceps, buttocks, and calves
