Rumi was a great Sufi mystic who was born in 1207 in the Persian Empire of Balkh in modern-day Afghanistan. At the age of 36, he met a great Sufi master named Shams who became his spiritual guide. Shams inspired Rumi to tread the Sufi path of love of God. Rumi wrote many volumes of teachings in verse for which he is well known and revered in the world.
