  • Caregiving with Confidence: Take the Guesswork out of Caregiving with Author Pam Reynolds

    After experiencing the challenges of caring for her ailing grandmother as a teenager, Pam Reynolds became a passionate advocate for older adults. Pam is a Certified Aging Life Care Manager, a Certified Professional Gerontologist, and a Certified Dementia Practitioner with a diverse vocational background that includes assisted living facilities and nursing home management as well as owning a company that helps older adults age in place at home. She is also the author of Caregiving with Confidence: Take the Guesswork Out of Caregiving, a book designed to prepare caregivers for a better caregiving experience.

     

    Pam joins us today to share her experience as a teenager caring for her grandmother with Alzheimer’s and how it inspired her to start her career in senior care, assisted living, and memory care. We discuss what motivated Pam to write her book and how it helps family caregivers find the tools, options, and resources they need as they navigate the caregiving journey.     Former U.S. Congressional Candidate, Rock Radio Hall of Famer, keynote speaker and author, Dayna Steele has a deep understanding of the challenges and emotional rollercoasters that caregivers endure. She is the author of multiple books, including Surviving Alzheimer’s With Friends, Facebook, and a Really Big Glass of Wine and the playwright and actor of The Woman In The Mirror Play, where she details her experiences as a caregiver through unfiltered observations, raw emotion, a bit of dark humor, and, of course, wine. Dayna is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in Drama, Dramatics and Theatre Arts and is a staunch advocate for Alzheimer’s patients and their loved ones.

     

    Dayna joins us again today to share some of the funny stories and memories she has of caring for her mother with Alzheimer’s and the things she considered when searching for a long-term memory care facility. In her book and play, Dayna shares her experiences as a caregiver through unfiltered observations, raw emotion, and a touch of dark humor as she chronicled her mother’s journey with Alzheimer’s on Facebook.

  • The Montessori Approach to Dementia with Dr. Cameron Camp

    Dr. Cameron Camp is the Director of Research & Development at the Center for Applied Research in Dementia, an organization on a mission to improve the quality of life of people living with dementia and other related disorders as well as the lives of their caregivers. With over 30 years of experience in the applied and translational research of gerontology, dementia intervention, and cognitive intervention, Dr. Camp’s work has become internationally renowned for improving the quality of life in patients with dementia and memory disorders. He is the co-holder of two patents and has been appointed as Principle Investigator on several NIH-funded projects. He has served as the President of the Adult Development and Aging division of the American Psychological Association and regularly lectures on the use of Montessori Dementia Interventions around the world, including in Asia, Austrailia, Europe, and North America. Dr. Camp joins us today to discuss the Montessori approach to dementia. We discuss the fundamental values of the Montessori approach and how he discovered its teaching methods were effective in patients living with dementia.   • Why is My Loved One Having Trouble Swallowing with Janet Standifer

    For over 40 years, Janet Standifer has worked in various roles within the healthcare field. In 1982, after earning her Master’s degree as a Speech-Language Pathologist from Southwest Texas State University, she began her professional career working in a variety of settings to provide direct patient care to adults as well as clinical interventions for people diagnosed with progressive neurocognitive impairments. Today, Janet works as a Certified Dementia Trainer and Consultant at J Standifer Consulting, LLC: Dementia in Perspective, where she provides intensive dementia education as well as individual and group training workshops.

     

    Janet joins us to discuss why your loved one with dementia may experience trouble with swallowing. We discuss what dysphagia is, its various causes and symptoms, and how a speech-language pathologist can help.
