This week I chat with my Dougie, he joined the Royal Navy in 1982, originally as an electronics apprentice, he then went on to complete the Ship’s Diver course. A four-week course training selected ship's company in self-contained air diving to 30m and to complete ship’s bottom searches to locate IEDs and to complete some basic underwater engineering tasks.

In the summer of 1991, Dougie attended SBS selection at RM Poole. Unfortunately, he was RTU’d just prior to the jungle phase due to soldiering skills not being up to scratch. He went on to support UKSF, carrying out IED role in support of SAS and SBS for maritime Counter terrorism role. Using closed-circuit oxygen rebreathers. Trained in numerous insertion techniques, including fast boat, underwater approach, helicopter insertion, parachute.

Dougie eventually left the RN and started working as a PADI Instructor at a nearby dive site and then landed a contracted job in Iceland, originally supposed to be done on Carleton MK16 CCR. This involved the recovery of human remains from a sunken fishing vessel in 83m of water. The job ended up being done surface supplied, out in Iceland for six weeks working off one of the old Icelandic gunboats from the cod war. The team included 3 ex Clearance Divers and one ex SBS bloke. Diving on the wreck to recover the crew and video surveys for the contractor.
