  • Finding Peace Beyond the Pain - Guest Michel O'Hare on healing after losing her son
    2024/07/26
In this episode, Debbie speaks with guest, Michel O'Hare, who lost her son to suicide after his battle with schizophrenia. After spiraling downward following such a traumatic experience, Michel was able to not only choose healing for herself, but to transform her experience into helping others.
Michel O'Hare is a Mother, a Wife, a Sister, a Friend, and a Facilitator of Healing. She lives in Black Mountain, North Carolina in her first house that really feels like "home," tucked away in an ensemble of trees and surrounded by the beauty of the mountains. Most of her life has been made up of running away from one tragic situation and running into the next. And yet, her life has also been the means of learning that no matter how fast you run, it will all catch up with you eventually. Everything caught up with her when her son, Skyler took his life 5 ½ years ago.

The grief that she fell into was a combination of all the losses she has ever experienced throughout this traumatic lifetime and beyond. For the past three and a half years, she has been building a business. This business is a place that she has had to cultivate within herself first before it could be a place of healing for others. Also, this might sound crazy, but she could never have facilitated healing for others in the way that she does, if it wasn't for the tragic loss of her child. He woke her up and gave her Purpose. She no longer runs, but instead stands and faces all things with an open heart, and every day, she gets to help others to do the same.

  • Finding Peace Beyond the Pain - Coping when your adult child has mental illness and addiction
    2024/07/19
In this episode, Debbie speaks with guest, Amy Colliton, about coping when your adult child has mental illness and addiction. As a parent, Amy shares her experience, strength, and hope.

Amy Colliton has 42 years of recovery from Alcohol and Addiction, having gotten sober at age 21. Three years into recovery she joined Alanon to help cope with the Alcoholic family she was raised in. She has spent many years in service sharing her experience, strength and hope with others seeking recovery. She has two wonderful children, one son without addiction problems and a daughter afflicted with active addiction and mental health problems, borderline personality to be specific. Her recovery is not transferable, if only she could give it to her daughter. Having grown up in a home with long term sobriety does not protect her children from the disease. Her recovery has taught her many ways to cope with the challenge of watching the one you love suffer so greatly. One such tool is that she knows now in her heart she did not cause her addiction, she did not cause it, she can't cure it, and she certainly can't control her addiction or mental health.
