  • Turning Intergenerational Trauma Into Intergenerational Hope: Interview With A Black Clinical Psychologist
    2024/11/12

Our conversations around generational trauma have evolved to become more nuanced and to shed more light on the Black experience in the United States. But what if, instead of creating intergenerational trauma, there was a way to build intergenerational hope? In this episode of the Found Free podcast, I talk to Dr. Raquel Martin, a licensed clinical psychologist and a social justice advocate, about how to reverse the cycle of oppression that Black people are born into.

Dr. Raquel begins by explaining how she started her career as a psychologist and how she links social justice to her patient care. She highlights the two main conditions that she treats in her Black patients and how she combats them in the way she’s raising her own children. You’ll also learn how oppression shows up in our society – particularly in the education system – and how it impacts young Black children.

This episode was the first part of my interview with Dr Raquel. If you enjoyed it, make sure to subscribe to the Found Free podcast so you catch the second part where we’ll discuss how to spot internalized oppression in ourselves and in our daily lives.

  • Q&A With A Reproductive Justice Doula
    2024/10/29

This episode of Found Free dives into multiple aspects of being a doula as I answer common questions about doulas, birth work and reproductive justice. Whether you’re expecting a baby and looking for a doula or you’re a doula yourself, you’ll want to tune in and discover the hidden side of this complex, important job.

I walk you through the common questions that doulas get, from how to work with Medicaid to what I wish I’d have known before becoming a doula. You’ll learn how to tie in your own moral and ethical framework to your birth work and how birth work and sex work align with each other. I also share stories from my career as a doula to give you insight into how to recover from birth trauma and how to build up your support network. And if you’re a new doula, stay tuned to the end to hear how to attract clients who align with your values and appreciate your skills.

Thank you so much for joining me on the Found Free podcast; I so appreciate how you’ve all followed my journey pushing for reproductive justice in birth work. • “I Had an Abortion”: What Abortion Activism Looks Like
    2024/10/15

The history of abortion in America is also the story of people of color: a struggle for independence, respect, and self-determination. In this episode of the Found Free podcast, I talk with Renee Bracey Sherman, a Black woman who had an abortion at 19 but didn’t see her own story reflected in the current abortion discussion. She’s on a mission to change that.

Renee begins by telling me about her abortion and how she felt shame and stigma around it from her family. She details her journey into activism and reproductive justice, describing what made her want to include people of color in the narrative around abortion. Listen out for our discussion about her upcoming book, Liberating Abortion, and what her research into the history of abortion taught her.

We finish off the episode by discussing how the overturning of Roe vs. Wade will change abortion provisions in the United States and what Sherman’s hopes for her book are. If you enjoyed this discussion on this key part of reproductive justice, please consider subscribing to the Found Free podcast and leaving me a review.
