  • サマリー

  • Hello there, welcome to the Good Enough Shrink podcast! We are your hosts, Dr. Jenna Cheng and Dr. Patrick Kelly. We are child, adolescent and adult psychiatrists practicing in the Los Angeles Area.

We are on a mission to demystify child psychiatry, and have conversations surrounding difficult topics on youth and adult mental health. But not without a bit of play along the way!

The title of this podcast is a tribute to the famous child psychiatrist, Donald Winnicott, and his concept of the "Good Enough Parent.” This is the idea that the imperfect but sufficient provisions of a parent build the child's resilience in an imperfect world. We want to empower children and parents to embrace their strengths and flaws, and know that you are good enough.

Importantly, we want to emphasize the power of holding difficult emotions from the lens of attachment theory. Attachment theory is based on the idea that humans need a social bond with another to survive. This bond, when it is “good enough”, serves as a secure base from which a child can explore the world unafraid. Your attachment experience from childhood is malleable and can influence the way you approach relationships in adulthood, serving as its own motivational system. When this attachment is disrupted, it can lead to emotional issues and sometimes full blown psychiatric disorders. This is where psychiatrists and therapists come in.

This podcast is for the curious adults, parents, family members, mental health professionals and trainees, looking to understand mental health from a developmental perspective. So we hope you join us in this adventure! To explore how your childhood might have shaped your adulthood. That small wins can have big impacts, and big losses can be overcome by the smallest wins. To see that you are not doomed if you had adversity in your childhood. Your experiences and feelings matter. They belong to you, and you can own them to propel you toward enlivening your life.

    2024/09/20

**Trigger warning for content on self-harm, suicide and eating disorders. Please feel free to op out and prioritize your sense of safety if you need to do so.**

This is a tough one. The positive effects of social media on mental health can be lifesaving, yet its negative effects may lead to a life taken far too early. We have a nuanced discussion on social media's pros and cons, and how to help your child or someone who may be addicted to it. There is a dire need for change, and it starts with all of us. We list out specific recommendations for social media use in kids and teens, and how to have a conversation with them to develop a family media plan.

  • Attachment Theory III: The Neuroscience of Attachment
    2024/09/04

We are back! In this episode, we talk about attachment theory from a neuroscientific and neurobiological perspective. We highlight how talking about our emotions can help us regulate them, and make room for empathy and "mentalizing" other people's experiences. We also discuss how attachment trauma can disrupt brain development, and how mindfulness and staying attuned to your body can mitigate this. Finally, we discuss the categorization of attachment experience in the DSM, and the importance of understanding the etiological basis of mental health conditions for effective treatment.

  • The Shortage of Stimulant Medications for ADHD - Why It's Still a Problem Today
    2024/08/21

In this episode, we take a quick break from attachment theory and dive into a very real, current problem we face today: the stimulant medication shortage for the treatment of ADHD. We explore the complex regulatory systems surrounding stimulants, including supply chain issues and being lumped into the category of Schedule II medications monitored by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to fight the Opioid Epidemic. The pressures from many layers of control fall on the shoulders of the pharmacist, and worst of all, the patients. Lastly, we discuss how to mitigate this shortage issue for patients, and the need for patient advocacy amongst clinicians.
