Prepare to ditch whatever you’re doing so we can talk about PLANE, which is a movie about a plane.

Before we go on…. You should probably ask all the lawyers to leave the room.

Greg and Joe discuss Gerard Butler’s commitment, their love of situation rooms, and what they’d do if their cell phone died (don’t worry, it makes sense). Long story short, we’re pretty sure the avionics are down, but this episode is a stick of dynamite and it’s about to blow.

Play along with new drinking games, answer important questions with us, and in general lament Trailblazer Air making money decisions.

This week on Formulaic Bish-Bosh, the MCU and GBU (Great Bad Universe) crossover episode is finally here. Greg and Joe have the conversation that needed to happen about our greatest actors, producers, and second unit directors, who team up to make a popcorn movie that’s better than anyone anticipated. It’s real to both of them, and they’re not afraid to say it at the dinner table with their fake Russian parents.

Take a drink every time Greg makes a sound effect and every time Joe complains about CGI action.

    Three words: Great Great Movie.

Our second Tony Scott/Denzel Washington movie in a series of five. We swap out Man on Fire's cartel and BHBs with Chris Pine and a runaway train. And you know what? It's amazing. Because it turns out a train with no brakes is a TRAIN WITH NO BRAKES. It's a movie so timeless that we're embarrassed for all the other movies, forever.

Is this movie just a metaphor about our stunning mortality in the face of impending death? Probably not. Is this a movie with a ton of literal helicopters all over the place? YES. It's time for us all to be the Ned in somebody's life, and hop in our truck, needlessly peel out, and tell someone you love about 2010's Unstoppable.

In a very special Marky Mark episode, Joe and Greg discuss how Wahlberg starts the movie with short hair, but then has a ponytail, and then short hair again... So to answer your question: Yes, there’s a LOT to unpack here. Joe dares to ask if we should take Marky Mark seriously, and Greg just kind of Gregs a lot.

See if you can follow any coherent plot (if you find one please let us know.) Play along with our drinking games and listen for new tropes. This movie has it all.

  • The Rundown
    2024/09/11

2003’s biggest surprise (besides The OC and maybe Arnold becoming a governor.) A movie, star, and director that are all SO much better than you’d expect. Remember 2003? This movie encapsulates it. The Rock is a professional bounty hunter who hates his job, guns, and a wannabe Indiana Jones named Travis (Seann William Scott), who’s too busy searching for a mythical golden artifact in the Amazon to answer his dad’s phone calls. Rosario Dawson is reliably great in a well-written part that's basically Karen Allen from Raiders of the Lost Ark minus the drinking competition (👎) and romance (👍).

What follows is a buddy comedy where “buddy” mostly means “I’ll beat you up if you don’t stop talking.” The Rock tries to keep a straight face while dealing with angry rebels, homicidal monkeys, and Christopher Walken’s unhinged speech about tooth fairy folklore. Yep, that happens.

Add in some slow-motion fight scenes, a lot of jungle explosions, and more eyebrow-raises than we'd like to talk about, and you’ve got The Rundown—a movie that fosters this week's conversation that needed to happen.

A movie about grown ups, who go to work and solve crimes, in shorts.

We know pants are important to you. You probably wonder, “how are these movie detectives constantly running around in full length pants??” That’s why this week’s episode is about 1993’s Striking Distance with Bruce Willis and Sarah Jessica Parker. They opted for short pants, because we can all make decisions.

Quick question: Is there a distance left to strike? Play along with our drinking games, important questions, and insightful tips on how to have a conversation in the middle of a car chase. This movie is a who’s who of “hard boiled” male actors chewing the scenery. Secure the stern line and get ready for a movie where MOST of the people seem to be enjoying themselves, minus Bruce Willis. Probably because of the shorts? Probably because of the shorts.

(If you've read this far, you should know that we determined there was no distance left to strike.)

A truly great, but also delightfully ludicrous modern masterpiece of Hollywood excess... A movie that swings for the fences and ends up in the parking lot, yet somehow, that's exactly what makes it great. We love funny Gosling, we love Emily Blunt... And together they make something bigger than the sum of its parts.

Stop it. This is a Great GREAT Movie.

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's essentially perfect dynamic is the heart of this incredible summer-kablooie movie. This isn't a bad movie podcast, it's a great movie podcast, but... That said... Sometimes those great movies have Jean-Claude Van Damme in them. In this case, Joe and Greg don't even pretend this movie has badness in it... They were too busy holding their breath and enjoying Doug Liman's classic film, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this summer.

The film’s genius lies in its ability to mix high-stakes action with genuine humor. Just when you think you’re watching a serious war movie, Cruise’s comedic timing kicks in, turning imminent death into a punchline. It’s a blend of Groundhog Day and Starship Troopers, but, you know... Super good.
