  • 005 - Financing, Incentive, & Rebate Landscape with Samir Pendse of Coral
    2024/08/26

In Episode 5 of the podcast, we speak to Samir Pendse, co-founder and CEO of Coral, a New York-based startup working to accelerate the energy transition by providing software to contractors in order to streamline the complexity of incentives, tax credits, and tax rebates, in turn making heat pumps - and other electrification projects - easier and cheaper to finance for both those contractors and the end consumers.

  • 004 - Demand Response Protocols & Trends, with Rolf Bienert of OpenADR
    2024/08/19

In Episode 4, I speak to Rolf Bienert, the founding Managing Director of the OpenADR Alliance. OpenADR Alliance is the non-profit standard maker and certifying body for the biggest and most widely adopted open standard for “demand response” (DR) protocols that impact EV chargers, HVAC, and electric water heaters.

In this episode, Rolf and I spend the first half of the conversation getting a broader overview of what DR is and the present state of the industry in terms of its adoption by OEMs and utilities. We also discuss the consumer incentives which have driven DR out of HVAC appliances and into the thermostat while mostly keeping DR protocols out of our water heaters.

Finally, we spend the last half of the interview talking about the new standard called EcoPort (aka CTA 2045) and the recent legislation in Washington, Oregon and California which will likely change the DR story for water heaters nationwide – giving a new boost to water heating DR programs that have languished in recent years.

  • 003 - Heat Pump & Electrification Coaching, with Nick Stevens of Go Electric Colorado
    2024/08/12

On Episode 3, we talk to Nick Stevens, Co-Founder and board President of Go Electric Colorado, one of the non-profits pioneering the concept of “electrification coaching” and “heat pump coaching.”

We will explore how volunteer-staffed coaching organizations are springing up across the country with the mission of educated neighbors and the general public about getting fossil fuels out of the home and moving to healthy and climate-friend appliances like heat pumps, trying to demystify a process that can seem intimidating and bewildering to many.

  • 002 - Decarbonizing LIDAC Homes with Ryan Trauley of Civic Works
    2024/08/05

Before millions of homes upgrade to a new heat pump – especially homes in low income and disadvantaged communities – multiple home health issues will need to be addressed first. For example, it would be best practice to make sure a home is properly insulated and air sealed so that their new heat pump can work most efficiently, yet if there's mold in the attic and a roof leak causing the mold, those two things need to be taken care of before the insulating and air sealing can be done, and before the insulation is upgraded.

On Episode 2 of the Heat Pump Review Podcast, we talk to Ryan Trauley of Civic Works' Energy Programs and Center for Sustainable Careers. Civic Works is a 30 year old, Baltimore-based non-profit on the front lines of the energy transition. They work with low income homes, helping them improve their home's safety and efficiency, and helping them upgrade appliances and access grant and incentive funds to do so. They also have an important career training initiative to help people transition into solar, roofing, and other jobs critical for the energy transition.

  • 001 - Heat Pump Performance & Cold Climates with James Ma
    2024/07/29
What are the design limitations of heat pumps? Did you know you had an electric heater inside your freezer? And are heat pumps really just air conditioners in reverse? This week, we talk to James Ma about the science and engineering behind heat pumps and where much of the performance gains - especially in cold climates - have been coming from in recent years. At the time of the recording, James was an Energy Executive in Residence at the Maryland Energy Innovation Accelerator (MEIA) and a former startup founder who created novel materials to help power cold climate heat pumps. • 000 - Intro to the Podcast
    2024/07/26

I am excited to announce the Heat Pump Review podcast. The goal is to discuss heat pumps in a way that is accessible to people who are curious about the technology and how the technology can be best developed and deployed as the world transitions from inefficiently burning fossil fuels to efficiently heating and cooling our homes, our businesses, heating our water, cooling our foods, and even greening our industrial processes with an ever improving energy grid.

In the upcoming season, we'll talk to experts across the materials science making heat pumps better in cold climates, non-profits helping drive the adoption of heat pumps, financing startups and CDFIs that are helping make them more accessible, and more.

Thanks for subscribing and thank you for sharing with other heat pump enthusiasts!
