Highlighting Mental Health Within The Construction Industry With Mates In Construction

  • サマリー

  • In today’s episode …

Steve and co-host Ryan Gazzard from Regent Homes sit down with Amanda Braddock, Case Manager and Field Officer at Mates in Construction SA, to have a raw and honest conversation about the important and unfortunately unspoken topic of Mental Health within the Construction Industry.

At a time when the Construction Industry is dealing with some of the biggest challenges it has ever gone through, there is no better time than now to be doubling down on the mental health safety of our employees, especially when the Construction Industry continues to witness alarming statistics, losing one person every second day to suicide in this country.

While the Industry has always paid attention to the physical safety of its employees, the unfortunate reality is that a construction worker is 6 times more likely to die by suicide than an accident on the job. Now more than ever with the extra pressures COVID-19 has presented, we need to be investing time into the mental health safety of our employees too.

This is where Mates in Construction comes in. With an aim to build a community that can keep each other safe, Mates In Construction provides free training sessions to individuals, businesses and small teams, to equip people in the Construction Industry with the necessary skills to recognise and provide assistance to a struggling mate. Amanda highlights that MATES want early intervention to be their thing, emphasising that they are here to support everyone within our industry and their families too.

Through this podcast, we aim to remove the stigma associated with Mental Health and bring light to a topic that people can be uncomfortable talking about. Starting the conversation and encouraging the industry to take leadership on a topic that affects so many, reduces the shame of people being able to stick their hand up and say “I am not ok”. Remember, it can be an innocent conversation with a mate that turns into early intervention and suicide prevention.

Today’s episode does mention the word suicide and brief conversations are had. We would like to add a trigger warning to this episode and if anything mentioned in this podcast is triggering or you want to debrief, Mates in Constructions are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week on 1300 642 111.
