God instructs Jacob to return to Bethel. Rachel dies giving birth to Benjamin, and Isaac passes away. Jacob’s twelve sons are named.

Shechem, a Canaanite prince, defiles Dinah. In revenge, her brothers Simeon and Levi deceive and massacre the men of Shechem.

Jacob meets Esau, who surprisingly embraces him warmly. After a peaceful reunion, they part ways.

Jacob sends messengers and gifts to appease Esau. During the night, he wrestles with a mysterious man (often interpreted as God) and is blessed with the name Israel.

Jacob secretly leaves Haran with his family and possessions. Laban pursues, but after God warns him in a dream, they make a covenant of peace.

Jacob has children with Leah, Rachel, and their maidservants. The twelve sons of Jacob are born, who will become the twelve tribes of Israel. Jacob also prospers through selective breeding of Laban’s flocks.

Jacob arrives at Laban’s house and falls in love with Rachel. He agrees to work seven years for her hand in marriage. However, Laban tricks him, and Jacob ends up marrying Leah first. Jacob then works another seven years to marry Rachel.

On his journey to Haran, Jacob has a dream of a ladder reaching to heaven with angels ascending and descending. God reaffirms His covenant with Jacob, promising to bless him and his descendants. Jacob makes a vow to God.
