• Why Pete Alonso Is Especially Happy With Vlad Jr's New Contract
    2025/04/08

We woke up this morning to find out that the Toronto Blue Jays had signed Vladimir Guerrero Jr to a 14-year $500 million contract extension and one of the happiest people on the planet is New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso.

After waiting all winter to finally reach an agreement with the Mets on a two-year contract as a free agent, Alonso may find himself in a FAR better position at the end of the 2025 season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates come under a lot of heat in this week's episode for a variety of reasons - from disrespecting the memory of perhaps their greatest player, to the probability of wasting one of the best young pitchers in the game.

Torpedo bats also continue to dominate the MLB conversation, and now you can find them in many local sporting goods stores.

And what to make of freshman Cooper Flagg and the disastrous collapse of the Duke Blue Devils in the NCAA Final Four over the weekend?

  • Make No Mistake About It - the Evil Empire Is BACK!
    2025/04/01

The New York Yankees made headlines this past weekend.

Not just with a complete dismantling of the pitiful Milwaukee Brewers, but with a barrage of home runs that some were attributing to the so-called "torpedo bat."

These odd-shaped bats have actually been around for awhile; in fact Giancarlo Stanton used one in 2024. A number of players used this in Spring Training this year, and players on other MLB teams (Francisco Lindor of the Mets for one) are trying them out in games.

Brewers pitcher Trevor Megill said over the weekend that if there was any funny business going on with the bats (hint - they are completely legal) that MLB will let it slide because it's the Yankees.

Congratulations, Mr. Megill. We're three games into the 2025 season and already the Yankees are in your head.

Also on this week's episode, N-I-L money continues to change the face of college athletics and it's on full display in both the men's and women's NCAA basketball tournaments.

  • Fun With Numbers - Does Jameis Winston Really Make the Giants Better
    2025/03/25

The Giants made some news with the recent signing of quarterback Jameis Winston. He's certainly an upgrade over Tommy DeVito at QB1, but given his career W-L record, how much can Giants fans really expect from Winston?

Everyone knows that you can never have enough pitching, and based upon some of what we've seen this spring, the Mets are Exhibit One. They used nine pitchers in Monday's Spring Training game against the Yankees, with mixed results.

Every MLB team has a tendency to overrate their prospects (the Mets, Yankees, and Red Sox especially), but the feeling here is that the Yankees made a critical mistake two years ago rushing Anthony Volpe to the majors. Based upon his minor league stats, the Red Sox are in serious danger of doing the exact same thing with the #7 MLB prospect in rookie Kristian Campbell.

Jim Monaghan and Chris Swendeman touch on all of that, plus Swendy has a rather unique idea on a pitcher the Yankees might want to take a look at.

  • Why Yankees Fans Should Not Panic Over All These Injuries - At Least Not Yet
    2025/03/17

It seems as if every day there is another Yankee going down with one injury or another.

Over the weekend, pitcher Clark Schmidt was scratched from a start with shoulder soreness.

Today, Paul Goldschmidt left the game after two at bats with a back issue. While Goldschmidt doesn't expect this to affect him being ready for Opening Day, at his age (37) there is at least some cause for concern.

That said, on this week's Two-Minute Drill podcast, Jim Monaghan and Chris Swendeman look at the American League East and have some words of optimism for the Yankees and their fans.

  • The Gerrit Cole Injury - Was It Only A Matter of Time?
    2025/03/11

The Yankees and their fans received devastating news on Monday that 2023 Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Cole, who missed part of the 2024 season with elbow issues experienced pain and discomfort after his last Spring Training start, which has ultimately resulted in him becoming the 3rd Yankee pitcher to undergo Tommy John surgery in just the past few weeks.

Jim Monaghan spoke with two sports medicine experts to get their take on what may have happened with Cole, and why there has been such a rash of injuries this spring.

Football is on tap this week as well. Jim has a rather odd take on what the Giants should consider doing at quarterback, and Chris Swendeman couldn't disagree more.

  • Pete Rose Has Only Himself To Blame For Not Being Eligible For the Hall of Fame
    2025/03/04

Jim Monaghan is back from his quick trip to Fort Myers and checking out spring training for the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox.

He's joined by co-host Chris Swendeman to talk about more injuries for the Yankees (when you lose the reigning American League Rookie of the Year for a couple of months that is NOT good), the upcoming trade deadline for the NHL, and the return of Pete Rose into the baseball news cycle.

Make no mistake - the Yankees will have a BIG problem replacing Luis Gil.

The Rangers and Devils are in slightly different positions heading into the final few weeks of the regular season.

Pete Rose's family has approached MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred about the possibility of Rose finally getting eligibility for the Hall of Fame, and it's not going to be an easy decision.

  • Injuries Are Already Piling Up For the Yankees Just A Week Into Spring Training
    2025/02/25

Jim heads to Florida to watch the Yankees and Red Sox in a spring training game and brings the lousy New Jersey weather with him.

The NHL's new approach to their All-Star Game, the 4 Nations Faceoff, was a rousing success, and may be a good sign for the sport (and the NBA if that league is paying attention).

Meanwhile, more injury problems for the Yankees as Giancarlo Stanton is in New York to meet with Yankees team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad to discuss the slugger's tennis elbow issues. And there are two Yankees pitchers who have just had Tommy John surgery.

And a 50-year old Yankees team rule goes by the books and Chris couldn't be happier!

  • What the NBA (and maybe the NFL) Can Learn From This Year's NHL All-Star Festivities
    2025/02/18

On this latest episode of the Two-Minute Drill podcast (does this thing actually ever only run two minutes?) it's the dilemma of the All-Star Game.

While President Trump may have put a spark into the NHL's event with some of his recent comments about Canada, the new format probably helped as well.

Plus, there's the NBA's upcoming media deal that may have an effect on their All-Star festivities going forward.

And spring training is barely underway and both the Mets and Yankees are dealing with injuries to players who are supposed to be a big part of their respective team's 2025 season.
