Inside the Hoosac Tunnel aka the 'Bloody Pit.' A look back at the connection between MTV and WWE in the 1980s. The funniest knock-off brand products.
Spooky season kicks off here with Episode 164.
The Hoosac Tunnel in Western Massachusetts is a marvel of 19th-century engineering. It is also one of the most haunted places in the entire state. We take a look at the history of this railway as well as why it is ominously referred to as the 'Bloody Pit.'
Kids of the 1980s very likely watched either MTV, the WWF, or both. We go way Back In the Day to look at the popular and highly profitable Rock 'n' Wrestling connection between the two entertainment behemoths as they were on their way up in the mid-1980s.
Store brand products and knock-off brands can be a good deal. Some of these might be good deals but this week's Top 5 looks at the funniest knock-off products ever.
A fitting This Week In History and Time Capsule for Spooky Season looks at the debut of the monumental horror film Night of the Living Dead.

The compact disc hits middle age. Wacky fast food fails of the disco era. More sights from a Northern New England road trip.
Episode 163 kicks off autumn by falling into some fun nostalgia.

The 1970s were a unique time, with disco music, Pet Rocks, and odd choices by fast food establishments. This week's Top 5 looks at 1970s fast food fails including some by giants of the industry.
The new This Week In History and Time Capsule gets meta as we look back at a time capsule buried in New York City as part of the World's Fair in 1939.

  • Episode 161: Howard the Duck, Nintendo Entertainment System Remix, Passing Fads of the 1970s, Psycho(9-11-2024)
    2024/09/11

    Send us a text

A movie so bad my grandmother made us walk out? Passing fads of the 1970s? A remix from the first episode of the podcast?
Episode 161 looks ahead toward the fall while looking back with a heavy dose of nostalgia.
It kicks off with a movie widely considered to be one of the worst of the 1980s. Howard the Duck was a somewhat popular Marvel Comics character so how did he end up as a punchline in the annals of terrible movies? We'll get into that plus the story of how my grandmother and I walked out of the theater during the film.
It's a double-dip of Back In the Day as we not only take a look back at the beginnings of the Nintendo Entertainment System but also back to Episode 1 of the podcast as the NES was a part of the very first show. It's time for a retro remix.
Not everything that is popular stays popular. This week's Top 5 is proof of that as we look at the passing fads of the 1970s. Did you partake in any of these?
There is a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule featuring the release of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, the godfather of slasher films.

Famous and infamous tabloid talk shows. Some of the myths you believed growing up. How school was different in the 1980s.
Episode 160 of the podcast is a trip back in time as kids go back to school.
It begins with some shows that might have been on rotation during school sick days in the 80s. With the recent death of pioneering talk show host Phil Donohue we take a look at his revolutionary show as well as some of the other tabloid-style talk shows that he helped usher in during the 1980s.
Iconic author Edgar Allan Poe said, “Believe nothing you hear and only one half that you see.” This goes double for myths you believed as kids. We go way Back In the Day to discuss some of these myths from the innocent(the moon is chasing the car), to the more ominous(gum stays in your stomach for 7 years).
In honor of Back to School this week's Top 5 looks at some ways that school was different in the 1980s compared to the present day. From technology to fashion, and some actual education, it's all here.
There is also a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule centered around the very first science fiction movie A Trip To the Moon.

What was Grunge Culture? What were some of the most memorable commercial jingles of the 1980s? What were some of the most dangerous toys ever made? Whose birthday is the same day as when this podcast drops?
Episode 159 attempts to answer these questions.
It begins with a look at Grunge music. However, this goes far deeper into the culture that surrounded the music. We look at the fashion, the attitude, and of course the music that helped make this a defining experience for many 90s kids.
We go way Back In the Day to share some earworms in the form of 1980s commercial jingles. Many good, a few bad, all memorable. Did you want to be a Toys r Us kid?
Santa would not leave these toys. This week's Top 5 looks at some of the most dangerous toys ever made. Broken ankles? Sharp and heavy objects? Extreme heat? Actual radioactive material? It's all in here.
There is a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule looking back at the massive Krakatoa volcano eruption.

Fights to the death between clay versions of celebrities? Some of the weirdest but true news stories of the 1970s? My favorite athletes of the 90s? How could so much fun nostalgia be stuffed into one show? Carefully.
Episode 158 starts with news stories from the 1970s that are weird for different reasons. Some are hilarious, some are horrifying, some are so bizarre but one thing they have in common is that they are true.
Back In the Day there was a show that featured clay versions of celebrities fighting to the death. That show was Celebrity Deathmatch and it was fresh, new, and hilarious. We look at why this show was such a popular part of MTV for years and wonder about if it could be made today.
This week's new Top 5 looks at the great decade that was the 1990s and more specifically some of the best (in my opinion) athletes that played then. Your lists will definitely vary.
There is a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule featuring the story of the birth of the NFL.

  • Episode 157: Getting Paid to Stay Home For 9 Months; 1990s Brief Return of Swing Music; Top Ranked 1980s Movies; Far Side Comics(8-14-2024)

Getting paid full-time to sit at home for 9 months. The brief resurgence of Swing music in the 1990s. The top-ranked 80s movies as chosen by the people.
Episode 157 of the podcast ranges from the unbelievable but true, to the meta nostalgia of nostalgia itself.
It kicks off with Restaurant Storytime 9. In this installment, I tell the tale of being paid full-time to sit at home and not work for 9 months. This was all thanks to one man, Jack Connors. If you don't know who he is don't worry you will get an education here.
Nostalgia is a powerful drug. That which was popular oftentimes comes back around decades later. Such was the case with Swing music. A staple of the American youth in the 1930s and 1940s it faded away with the emergence of Rock & Roll. However, by the 1990s, the country was ready for Swing music Round 2, and we'll go way Back In the Day to look at that brief Swing revival.
The 1980s had more than its fair share of legendary movies. This week the Top 5 is actually a Top 10 as we look, in order, at the top-ranked movies of the decade using a poll on IMDb.com.
As always there is a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule centered around the birth of Gary Larson the creator of the iconic Far Side comics.
