🙏🏻 Dear listeners I am proud and delighted to share this episode with you. Recently I had the honour of meeting and interviewing Satish Kumar, author, peace and ecology activist, tireless advocate for nature and co-founder of the Schumacher College.
🇬🇧This episode is the first one that I have published in English. Although we both have accents the interview is very accessible and content is wonderful.
💝I asked Satish to share with us his wisdom and secrets on how he cultivates the art of attention. His response is clear, enthusiastic, contagious, and encourages us to enhance our attention to ourselves, others, nature, and society.
🌿I first met Satish during a course at the Schumacher College which was focused on Spiritual Ecology, an area which is still relatively unknown in France. I found the course inspiring, sincere, grounded, transformative and deeply touching. Recently, I returned to the Schumacher College in Devon for a weekend course on Radical Love exploring the journey from separation to reconnection with the Earth, others and oneself.
💫Let me tell you right away: you don't come back the same person after a training at Schumacher College. Or after a conversation with Satish : that’s why I am so grateful he agreed to come on this podcast.
🎙On a beautiful early spring day, with birds singing in the evening behind us, comfortably situated in the Schumacher College library, I interviewed him. Despite his 87 years, Satish exudes incredible energy to convey, detail, and unfold his convictions.
❤️Transmission, reflection, and peaceful activism seem to be at the core of his life. Satish led an extraordinary life: he was a Jain monk from the age of 9 to 18, then left the order after reading a book by Mahatma Gandhi on peaceful activism, with the question: how to inhabit the world, how to contribute?
At 26, in 1962, he set out with a friend on a peace walk from India to Washington, covering 12,800 km in 2 and a half years. He delivered a package of tea to the leaders of the four nuclear powers (in the Kremlin, Elysée Palace, 10 Downing Street, and the White House, among others).
Along the way, he met Martin Luther King, Bertrand Russell, Margaret Mead, EF Schumacher (the economist and author of "Small is Beautiful"), who proposed that he take over Resurgence Magazine. He then founded a unique school in Devon for children where they cultivate and cook their own vegetables. From 1991 onwards, he co-founded Schumacher College (for adults).
☕️I invite you to make yourself a cup of tea and let yourself be carried away by his words of peace and reconciliation.
Let's discover together how Satish Kumar includes the art of attention at the heart of his worldview.
