  • Monthly Mail Bag podcast - February 2025 - SAMPLE
    2025/02/12
Here's a sample of this month's Patreon-only Monthly Mail Bag, which is (mostly) dedicated to Brock Nelson, who might be in his final days with the only NHL club he's ever known, or might be on the verge of a contract extension that will be ridiculed no matter how reasonable it is. The full version includes our answers to questions about rebuilds, EBUGs, James Hagans, free agents, one-season wonders and, somehow, comic books. We also talk about what the NHL could actually do to remedy their dire TV product (as opposed to what we normally do, which is just tear down the whole operation). We also expose what we thought was common knowledge: that the "Josh Bailey Song" isn't actually about Josh Bailey at all! To hear the full episode without ads, go to Patreon.com/islandersanxiety and sign up for our Country Club tier. That gives you access to our full archive of Monthly Mail Bags and lets you ask your own question for our next edition. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • Islanders Anxiety - Episode 320 - Any Result is Possible
    2025/02/10
Mike and Dan recap where the Islanders are at the Four Nations break and discuss some recent rumors surrounding them. Despite a hot January, the Islanders are still four points out of a playoff berth with a large group of teams surrounding them and a disconcerting amount of injured players. While the winning streak pulled them out of the basement, they still have a large hill to climb which means the rest of the season and the trade deadline come loaded with a lot of questions. There's no telling what they might do or how the Eastern Conference will shake out, which is both exciting and scary. In the second half, we look ahead (barely) to the Four Nations Face Off and analyze the trade rumors that have popped up around Noah Dobson and the extension rumors about Brock Nelson. The possibility of both or neither exists and only Islanders fans will see the many nuances in both topics that the professional liars, prejudiced fans and other assorted idiots won't see. We have no answers but at least we've watched this team play all season, which is more than we can say for most people who talk about it. Subscribe to our Patreon! • Weird Islanders: The Podcast! - Episode 61 - Weird Islanders Quarter Century Team
    2025/02/07
Mike and Dan make their picks to each create a team of Weird Islanders from the past 25 years. It's been quite a journey for the team since 2000, from highs and lows to mercenaries and stalwarts to kids and veterans and three home arenas. And through all of it there were weird players who only wore the blue-and-orange for a short time. So we each put together a starting six based on gut feelings, good memories and attempted representation of where the Islanders were as a franchise at the time. Some we've talked about before and some are new but all of them made an impression despite quick exits. From big playoff goals to unmet expectations to truly anonymous players to first round picks to bad facial hair, we cover a lot of ground to build the best rosters we can from the Weirdest Islanders we could find. And we want to hear from you! Who do you think built the better team? We didn't make it easy on ourselves (because we almost never do and it's the Islander way). Subscribe to our Patreon! • Islanders Anxiety - Episode 319 - Clash of the Titans
    2025/02/04
Mike and Dan take stock and take cover as the Islanders rack up both wins and casualties in a battle against the Hockey Gods. By stretching their winning streak to a "disastrous" seven games - before a gallant, teasing loss to the Stanley Cup champion Panthers - the Islanders reinserted themselves in the Eastern Conference playoff race. That's the good news. The bad news is that they continue to lose bodies, the latest being Mat Barzal and Scott Mayfield, and their surprisingly effective junkyard blueline might not be able to withstand much more punishment. Their three tough upcoming games will go a long way towards determining how the rest of the season goes, but as of right now, demigod Lou Lamoriello is trying to fight off the deities playing games with his people. In the second half, we go deep into another Master Pens Theater and learn why you cannot make Sidney Crosby trade proposals or question Kyle Dubas's moves, even the bad ones. We also get a look at the JT Miller trade from the Vancouver side and what it has to do with Bo Horvat. This episode was sponsored by Pitney Bowes, the official shipping partner of the New York Islanders. Subscribe to our Patreon! • Islanders Anxiety - Episode 318 - The Invading Ottoman Empire
    2025/01/28
With yet another defenseman (and a goalie) landing on IR, Lou Lamoriello was forced to make another acquisition to keep the Islanders afloat and we are forced to talk about both. In an addendum to Monday's episode, we discuss the signing of Tony DeAngelo and our feelings about bringing the quarrelsome defenseman into the Islanders' fold. But we also discuss the trade for another defenseman, Scott Perunovich, who was once a prized prospect for both the Blues and a certain notable hockey podcast. A former Hobey Baker winner, Perunovich battled injuries and lost roster spots in his time in St. Louis, and might be a nice get for the Islanders, provided he can avoid the calamity that has chased their blueline around all season. Along the way we touch on off-beat goalie options, learn more about Hibbing, Minnesota and the Perunovich tradition of fighting back hordes and tease an upcoming new edition of Master Pens Theater. • Islanders Anxiety - Episode 317 - Hit The Hog in the Head
    2025/01/27
Mike and Dan discuss a week of unfortunate injuries and surprising wins for the Islanders and how they've had almost no effect on their place in the standings. Beginning with a win over the then-red hot Blue Jackets before a back-to-back that included a boring but needed win over the Flyers and a surprising OT win over the revamped Hurricanes, the week was another roller coaster for fans who have endured a lot in this season alone. While their path to the playoffs is still long and filled with nearly a dozen direct rivals, and they'll now be without three key contributors in Noah Dobson, Ryan Pulock and Marcus Hogberg, there were moments of genuine enjoyment this week for the first time in what feels like forever. Whether it was Anthony Duclair and Alex Romanov finally getting back on the board, Bo Horvat scoring an honest-to-god power play goal, Brock Nelson crushing the Canes in overtime or an injured Hogberg returning to the ice to accept his Third Star of the Game award (and Butch Goring's amusement at his nickname), the Islanders reminded us that we can still find fun in this sport. In the second half, we look at an upcoming slate of games that might derail that fun, and look at that big Hurricanes-Avalanche trade that confirmed a lot of what we believe about the Islanders, the NHL and the people that cover them. • Weird Islanders: The Podcast! - Episode 60 - Tommy Söderström (with guest Craig Dixon aka @IslesEbay)
    2025/01/24
Mike and Dan talk with IslesEbay master Craig Dixon about Tommy Söderström, the shambolic Swedish goalie who lost a lot of games in his short time as an Islander. Söderström parlayed international success into a stint with the Flyers, who sent him to Long Island in exchange for the pariah Ron Hextall. Sadly, Söderström didn't fare any better, and "backstopped" some of the worst Islanders teams ever assembled. He did himself no favors by looking like he just walked off the street to play goal that night, and despite a few very rare highlights, was cast aside just as quickly as he was acquired. He found success (and money) back in Sweden but he left some bad impressions on the few that watched those teams play (mainly us). Craig tells us about his ebay obsession and some favorite pick ups from over the years, how Söderström affected his young fan mind at the time and respecting his combative attitude and his abrupt goodbye to hockey. • Islanders Anxiety - Episode 316 - An Old Stale Cigarette
    2025/01/20
Mike and Dan discuss the Islanders' win over the Sharks on Brent Sutter Ring of Honor Night that, while pleasant enough, did little to change anything about this team or its season. For once, the Islanders took care of business beating a bad, under-the-weather opponent. Too bad it comes more than halfway through a season in which they've been farting around on the ice and with our emotions. A follow-up run against Metro Division opponents who are actually trying only serves to make the victory even more hollow, assuming the Islanders win their customary one or less games this week. We also discuss the warm and welcome Sutter ceremony and bring back for just the second time Master Pens Theater, as the Penguins say goodbye to a guy they shouldn't have said hello to in the first place, and the guy who opened the door doesn't get blamed at all.
