Donna M. Stallings was born and raised in Alexandria, Va, but left there in 1980 to attend college at Virginia Commonwealth University. After graduating in 1984 she decided to make Richmond her home. She started her career in the insurance industry, but after 15 years of working in various lines of insurance, she left corporate America to work in the nonprofit industry. She worked for five different nonprofits over the course of 18 years ranging from homeless services case management to homeownwership program management.
