And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed. Daniel refused to conform to the cultural and legal expectation that he would pray only to king Darius because his convictions would not allow him to disobey God. When high officials in the kingdom discovered Daniel praying, they reported him to king Darius. This crime bore the penalty of death, but God was working miraculously to preserve his servant.
